Awards announced - Newbery, Printz, Caldecott and more

Post by Sommer Leigh » January 11th, 2011, 1:52 pm

Nathan posted a question a while back about whether you are more likely to read a book that won an award (post here: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=2838) and there are a few awards I pay attention to every year and I make sure to check out.

I've never been let down by the winners. When you reach me by Rebecca Stead was my favorite discovery when it won the Newbery Medal.

Everyone has probably heard by now that they announced the winners for some of the big awards on Monday. You can find a full list of the awards and their winners at http://www.ala.org, but here are the four I pay close attention to every year.

Congrats to these authors! I'm really excited about Paolo Bacigalupi winning the Printz award for Ship Breaker. I'm actually in the middle of this book now. I've read his book The Windup Girl and I absolutely LOVED it. The Ship Breaker, so far, is living up to Bacigalupi's outstanding writing talent. Please Ignore Vera Dietz by A.S. King and Stolen by Lucy Christopher were already on my TBR pile.

Has anyone read any of these books? Do you plan to?

Thanks for sharing. My daughter just learned about the Newberry and Caldecott Awards, so we may check out the winners.

What an amazing honor. Can you imagine having one of those shiny treasures on the cover of your book?

I admit I have daydreamed about the Printz award.

You'll have to tell me what your daughter thinks of them if she reads them!
