Writers conference 5 minute presentation

Post by Annie O. » September 3rd, 2010, 12:27 pm

I am going to my first writer's conference at the end of the month and I have a 5 minute presentation with an agent. Do I give a synopsis of my book? Do I hold out on the ending? I'm new at all this and I need help. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Hi Annie,

You should go to Nathan's blog page and use the search function to research the "pitch". He's done numerous blog posts on the subject, and I even recall a video. I think you'll find what you need there.

Here's a link to get you started. Good Luck!!

Annie - I might also go to Nathans and search for writer's conferences. If I remember correctly, he recommends using most of the time to make a personal connection with the agent, rather than spend time on your synopsis.

But I could be wrong - check it out. And good luck!

I don't have any advice either except, wow, good luck! I'm terrible at speaking when I get nervous so you are a braver person than I am. I'll cross my fingers for you!
May the word counts be ever in your favor. http://www.sommerleigh.com

I ended up coming up with a two minute pitch, so I'd have time to talk to the agent after, get some feedback and pick her brain a little. Well...it didn't go quite as planned. I talked four and a half minutes and still didn't finish. She had thirty seconds to critique me. She was very nice and told me I could send her my work. I'm assuming that means a query. It was good experience and I had a lot of fun. The classes were great. I'll definitely go back next year. Thanks again to everyone.
