For Contemporary Fantasy Fans

Post by Margo » August 27th, 2010, 1:55 pm

What's the delight noise people use now? Squee?

SQUEE!!!

Did I do that right?

Anyway, for those who like contemporary fantasy, a la Charles de Lint, I happened to catch an interesting guest blog post here:

http://whatever.scalzi.com/2010/08/27/t ... e-shevdon/

The writer of SIXTY-ONE NAILS (out in the US on Aug 31) writes about the research that went into shaping the book, which is interesting all by itself. Then at the end of the post is a link to a 26-page excerpt. I love discovering a great author I've never read before. It looks like this is his first, but he has another due out in October (earlier outside the US).

Yay, another fan! I pre-ordered at one of my local bookstores. I know what I'm doing tomorrow night. If the whole book is as good as the first 26 pages, it's going onto my shopping list for a close friend's birthday. She loves faerie books that aren't twee. I think we've both done too much research to take twee faeries seriously.

At a glance, it looked really interesting, and so does the blog. So I bookmarked it. Thanks.
