Re: 1st post on here: 2010 ABNAs
I wouldn't have entered last year even if my manuscript was up to snuff at that point because the contest rules stated that the contract was nonnegotiable. That was more than enough to turn me off. I figure if you're good enough to beat ten thousand people in a contest, you're good enough to find an...

Re: How do you know when you're ready?
I have no idea. I've got a book that personally I think is as good as other published books I've read out there (particularly the last half, which I'd be willing to say is probably better than a lot of books out there), and I've had others agree with me, and I still have no idea if it's publishable....

Re: how many projects do you work on at a time?
Uno! I don't even like to write one novel while editing another. I'll put one of them aside, work my butt off to complete the other, then go back to it. That's mostly a tone/voice issue for me. My stories don't all necessarily sound or feel the same, and it's harder for me to get into one if I'm try...

Re: Copywritten or not??
I've got loads of these in mine, too, and think the same as Jamie. If it needs to be changed, someone will tell me if I ever get that far. Honestly, though, I think the only two I have to potentially watch out for are mentioning PETA (one character jokes about them, but another sticks up for them, s...

Re: Moving characters around
You can use page breaks or chapter breaks to speed forward in time the way Ink mentioned. Just have the character in a spot where something important happens then jump forward to the next important scene. And you can also use transitions to juggle time. {example} The drive home was long and perilou...

Re: How Do You Revise
If I'm revising just in general, I just print it off and go through it, sometimes with a specific thing in mind (for instance, my first big revision had, "Cut all the "for a moments" written on the inside of my printout. I swear there were about a thousand in there haha). The last one...

Re: Obvious villain is obvious?
The fact that your character is dead intrigues me. :) I just realized I'm facing a similar problem in my current WIP. I've figured out that the villain is semi-well known (as an innovative businessman), and I'd like to introduce him prior to when he actually shows up, just have him on TV or somethin...

Re: What are you writing now?
Great topic, Kaitlyne! I can't believe it hasn't been done, either! My MS is a paranormal romance, which is a genre I never thought I'd write! I actually sat down to write another idea I've had for years, which was a science fiction novel with elements of romance and comedy, but this paranormal rom...

What are you writing now?
Has this really not been done yet? I just did a quick browse but couldn't see anything about it. Anyway, the "Who writes literary fic" got me wondering...what sort of stories do you write? My last was a pretty lighthearted suspense story (which apparently is weird). I'm currently working o...

Re: the drawer novel
I have every intention of completely rewriting the very first novel I ever wrote because I like the idea and characters, so I don't think it's all that unusual at all. Granted, the second I don't ever plan to touch again. It was pretty awful, and I borrowed the few things I liked about it for my las...

Re: Ask Nathan
I know, I seem to have far too many questions, but I mentioned this over in the Publishing forum and someone suggested I put it over here as well. I'm going to make this simple and sweet. I'm fluent in Japanese and interested in working as a translator. I've written some samples, but have no idea r...

Re: Do you always have to connect the dots??
Personally? I like having to figure things out and not having things spoon-fed to me. Then again, there are obviously people like your friend for whom it doesn't work. It also makes a difference in context. Without reading your specific situation, it's hard to tell. In general I like "smart&quo...

Re: Something of an odd question about translations
I thought it sounded like a good idea. I was just pointing out that I wouldn't have thought of that myself. ;) I'll pop over and ask Nathan as well. I hate to feel like I'm bothering him haha.
You must be closer to my timezone, Holly. That or you just don't sleep. ;)

Re: Something of an odd question about translations
You might be right about the services, thing, though I always thought it was basically on a freelance basis. I have a friend who used to translate for Dark Horse, however he was picked up because they had seen some of his work online (not kidding) and contacted him. My original plan had been to targ...
