Re: The importance (and difficulty) of gestures
I try to use them in moderation; cliche gestures like 'shrugged.' I very rarely ever use a sigh, but I've used the occasional eye roll when a character is being sardonic. I also try to use character tics like false smiles, ones that tug at the corner or raise a brow or squinting an eye (which belies...

Justine - I queried another agent there weeks ago as well and have no response to date. Perhaps Nathan is just the cat's pajamas :-)

Re: Worst Query Competition
So, I got bored again and decided to do this some more. I would post my own query, but it's apparently been laughed at enough by agents. Deer Ajent: My therapist told me it wood be good for me to try to publish my memoir. Other ajents have turned me down, butt I'm sure your way smarter then them. It...

Re: TWILIGHT - thoughts?
I'll be honest and say I used to really bash Twilight and especially Meyer. I'll admit that maybegenius helped me see the error of my ways because whether or not the book did well and all the media hype... this was not Meyer's intent. She wrote a book and hoped to pay off her car. Instead, it became...

Re: Science Fiction Query
I really appreciate the feedback, and I've applied what you said to my letter because I feel like it did help. What do you think? Dear XXXXXXX, I am seeking representation for my first novel, Hounds of Heaven a 75,000 word science fiction novel. (move this to the bottom as your wrap up. I crossed o...

Re: Ask Nathan
From an agent's perspective, is there a POV that you dismiss as subpar? Some agents say they hate second person, others say that third person omnicient is amateur. Do you have an opinion of your own preference/rejection and that of the industry?

Finding An Agent Analogies
We've all heard the analogies going around about what it is like to try to find an agent: Speed dating. A ho looking for a pimp. Winning the lottery. Of those three, I just want to declare that finding an agent is NOTHING like winning a lottery. To win a lottery, you absently pull a dollar out of yo...

Re: How do you stop taking rejection personally?
I guess, at my heart, I'm a logical person. I don't take rejections personally because the agent doesn't know me and has not read my manuscript. They've read my query letter and either the plot, genre, word count, etc, did not grab their interest. Maybe they already rep a book like mine. Maybe they ...

Re: Head-Hopping - what's the deal people?
Here's my lame take on this. I have three main characters and a support cast of over ten characters central to the plot in my urban fantasy. It's impossible to tell the WHOLE story from one POV. When I even write one SCENE from one POV, the scene is lacking. I do the HORRIBLE AND CONSTANTLY FORBIDDE...

Re: Ask Nathan
I have several friends in the internet community that want to advertise my book for free. 1 has 400,000 hits. 1 has 100,000 hits. A few are in the 12,000-30,000 a year range. Is this something that would pique an agent's interest in a query? Or something that I don't mention until an agent is intere...

Re: Rejection Stats
no response: 28 Just curious, but how long ago did you send out those 28? Personally if they're fairly recent I would count them as "No response (yet):". If they've been sitting for a while... Some are four weeks ago, then some are more recent. I've not written them off yet. Some say to g...

This sounds a lot like Beauty and the Beast. Just sayin'.
