Breaking down a published novel's story

Hi, This is probably going to rank as the silliest question on these boards ever, but I'm unimpressively lost on this stuff (that's how amateur I am). Okay, I want to take a couple of books I enjoyed and go through them to "break them down". I have trouble sorting out the ideas in my head. So I want...

Re: Brandon Sanderson Class Online

Thanks for providing this link. I never search or find things like these on internet and I have no background in writing classes or teachings, so this is neat. I'm not interested in sci fi or fantasy, but I think it helps nevertheless. I am on lecture 3 I think. I just listen when time permits. I ju...

Manuscript Font

This is such a redundant and novice question I'm sure. But I'm still unclear (sorry). Nathan wrote in a great post on formatting manuscript: I have seen a whole lot of manuscripts in my day, and no two manuscripts have ever been formatted the same way. This means I have seen everything from 10 point...

Word/Chapter Count for YA (amateur question)

Let's assume you have a YA contemporary at 60,000 words (averagish length? yay or nay?). How many chapters would be average for a novel of that length? How many words per chapter? Yep, I know every novel is different. Yep, I know variation exists and is possible. And yep, I know that you ultimately ...

Re: Footnotes for MG?

Thanks for the advice. I've concluded that it doesn't work for MG (not with my amateur skills anyway). YA and adult, yes, I think it can work (if not taken to the extreme), but personally I can't get it right for MG...it would be annoying rather than entertaining. I thought Sophie Kinsella made grea...

Footnotes for MG?

In some YA or adult, this can work well (if done effectively and not "overdone" I guess anyway). But could it work in MG? (to up the amusement, wittiness, sarcastic nature of MC)...or am I misjudging the audience and it wouldn't be well received (might be misunderstood? might deter young readers who...

Re: Please give your thoughts :)

And what if I decided to take money that was "extraneous" for the month? (something I could certainly certainly use toward something else of value...but could be there to use for this?). Would you think it worth it? Would love to know.

Please give your thoughts :)

Hi Nathan, I really respect your thoughts and opinions. I read this : http://www.guidetoliteraryagents.com/blog/Everything+You+Need+To+Get+Started+Writing+Whether+It+Be+Fiction+Nonfiction+Novel.aspx What do you think? My funds are limited. But , it might be a good investment? I'm a complete newbie, ...

Booklife (have you read it?)

I've heard of this book "Booklife", not certain of the author. It is a book on writing I think. Anyone read it and think it is of value?

Holiday Books

I'm curious about books that might specifically narrow in on one holiday (Christmas, Halloween, etc). It seems that the really "big" or "better selling" books are not holiday-specific at all. Children's books might have an abundance of these...but not YA or adult, etc. Thoughts? Do you think it is d...

Re: How do terrible books get published?

I don't think there's such a thing as a real bad published book. Every book is just so unique. I like literary classics. I appreciate the LOTR trilogy. But I also devoured Nancy Drew and Goosebumps as a kid ("classic" to me). It's the same with the Twilight phenomena. So many people ridicule this bo...

Your writing

Hi Nathan I hope this question is okay. I really admire your writing and knowledge and the wealth of information you provide on this board. I'm curious if you have ever discussed your own writing process. How many novels you wrote prior to even thinking of submitting. Whether you've ever written sho...
