Name-calling

I was just wondering what's the feeling/rule/law about using the names of real songs, movies, people etc in your work. For example, if my characters meet at a concert, do I need to make up a singer, or can I just use a real one? As hard as I think about it, I can only think of one author who regularly threw in the name of singers, and it was like the same 3 singers in all his books, so I wonder if he'd spoken to them.
