Hopefully this will help some writers out there. I've been making lists for other writers on other sites about small press publishers, most of us come to this site because we don't have an agent or a publisher and well some publishers don't require you to have an agent. While searching for e-zines to send my short stories to I kept finding lists of small press publishers so I'm adding it here.

Some of them are closed to publishing but check back, these editors "claim" that they can only read so much at a time, and all this time that they are lean mean reading machines, I suppose we have no choice but to give these folks a break every now and then. pfft! lol.

The genres are Horror, Romance, Mystery, Science Fiction, Paranormal Romance aka Science Fiction Romance,

Hopefully others will add more. Bold means the start of a new genre.

Worth noting from the submission page:

If your story appears in IGMS it will count toward the publication requirement for membership in the Science Fiction Writers of America.

You might also want to include the Writers of the Future competition under sci-fi somewhere as it is free to enter, reasonably prestigious to win, and does involve cash and publication for winners.

That's very thoughtful of you to put together a list of publishers for writers. I'd just like to add my two cents and highly recommend that writers check author sites like Preditors & Editors http://www.anotherealm.com/prededitors before actually submitting to any publisher. Small press publishers sometimes go from being wonderful toward authors to ripping off authors and treating them badly when the publishing house doesn't make enough money or the publisher's under too much pressure or for lots of other mysterious reasons. Your list includes some wonderful publishers, but I recognize at least one publisher listed as NOT RECOMMENDED by Preditors & Editors.

Recently, many small presses have become nearly as difficult to get published by as it is to get a literary agent. They receive many wonderful submissions. Some small publishing houses have only one person reading submissions, and have started closing to submissions as soon as he or she has enough books queued up for publication for the next few months or half a year or whatever. Sometimes, the same person who reads through the slush pile is the same person who then formats the books, creates the book covers and sets the books up for publication and distribution. My understanding is that it's an exhausting job. One of the small presses you listed was started by an author who's also published by another small press on the list. We chatted online before she started her publishing house. Afterward, she told me that, if she had known beforehand how exhausting it would be, she might never have opened her own publishing house.

It started out as a scifi list for myself because I really didn't realize that all of these publications and companies were out there, and then I realized hey! Other people may not realize this either, lol!

So that's why it's here, I'll try to stop by to see what everyone else is posting and add it to the main list, but we'll see how that works out. I may be spending most of my time submitting to these folks. I've got two short stories and one of them I'm going to read "one more again" before I send them out.

I don't know, I could look. That might not be a bad idea for me to check out anyway, I'm finding out that YA just doesn't mean Goosebumps or Lois Duncan anymore.
