E-Publishers

I've read a lot of threads on self-publishing and agents turning into publishers themselves. After lots of frustration trying to get an agent, I went the route of contacting e-publishers - which are quickly flourishing.
I was accepted by one for one of my novels. But, it turned out to be poorly organized without marketing knowledge and it went under.
Having been accepted by one, I set out to find another and did. We signed a contract for world-wide digital rights. So far, my experience with them has been quite pleasant and result-oriented. I signed June 18th and we already have a near-ready cover, the first editor has gone over and made only minor changes and it's back to the senior editor for final approval. After that, it will go - once I approve it - to four reviewers. When that is over, it will be ready for release on not only their own website but Amazon, B&N and many others. I'm unsure of news releases and such but feel they'll have something worked out.
Does that mean I can sit back and wait for the royalty checks? Not hardly! It's gonna take some effort on my part.
At the same time, I found another and signed a contract for world-wide digital and _print_ rights.

So, here's my point - are we better off seeking an agent? Or seeking a publisher? An e-publisher?
For me, the experience so far has been positive.
How about someone else?

I think it's important that everyone choose the path that works best for them. There are advantages and disadvantages to each path, just make sure to do your research, know yourself, and the right way will present itself.

It is great to know that e publishing has worked well for you so far. E books seem to be the big thing right now. I also hear a lot of success from those that go with small presses that do a combination of print and e books.

Just do what feels right to you. If you go totally "Indie" it's a ton of work but you have total control. Even though you "signed" you will most likely do most of the PR yourself because I can't imagine the company having the resources to do much besides get you lined up on the different websites. If you plan on writing books for the rest of your life then it could be worth the time and effort to set yourself up as an indie publisher. Even though everybody and their mother and cousin is uploading an e-book to the Kindle Store I still think it is a great time for writers to send it on their own.
