book recommendation

I am in need of book recommendation.

One of my future works is a dystopian type book, but society hasn't fallen into the dystopian state yet. It's kind of a prequel to 1984 in a non-related way. (I hope that makes sense).

I haven't really been able to find anything in that realm to take a look at.

Anyone have any thoughts?

thanks!

I'm not entirely sure what you're looking for, but try The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood. It's told in present tense with flashbacks to show how society got to where it was.

This might sound weird, but Kafka. I'm always surprised when his "In the Penal Colony" doesn't show up in dystopian lists, and "The Castle" was a pretty clear premonition of life in a 1984-type society, with horrifying beaurocratic aristocrats that run everything and crush the souls of the populace, although before you get even half-way through it you realize he had no idea what was going on, at which point you should stop, because it's not going to go anywhere.

great! thanks John and Moni. I'll take a look at those.

The Castle does sound a bit like what I'm looking at doing.
