I have recently expanded a short story I wrote into a novel. The first chapter of the novel and the short story are not quite identical, but they're very, very similar.

Should I stop trying to get the short story published? Would publication of the short story help or hurt my chances of getting the novel published?

I don't think it would hurt your chances, provided the agreement you sign still allows you to proceed with the publication of the work as a whole. Just make sure to know what you sign!
