How to Describe Technical Work in a Story Without Making It Boring?

Post by NoraSilas » December 12th, 2025, 1:17 am

I am working on a small story idea and I face little problem with explaining technical type of work inside the scene. One of my characters is doing building-related tasks, and I want to show that he is focused and detail-minded, but when I write it, it start to sound dry and too much like instruction manual. In my real life I do things like MEP takeoff, where we check many small details, and I want to reflect this careful style in the character’s personality. But I don't want the reader to feel confused or bored. How can I show that a character is doing complex technical task without giving too much explanation? Should I keep it very short and only focus on emotion, or give few details so reader understand his skill?
