Wierdest Thing You Had To Look Up For Writing Reaserch

Recently I just published my first book, Imagination, which is a children's book.
Fortunately I didn't have to look up anything that sounded wierd to create this book, or nothing I can remember, but I'm pretty sure we've all had to look up something weird for writing research. My wierdest recently:
1980's Soviet Union Maternity Clothing.
I was trying to describe what the main character was wearing... and it happend to be the 1980's....and she is pregnant.

Fortunately, I did not need to consult any peculiar references to compose this book, or at least none that I can recall; but, I am certain that we have all encountered
bitlife the need to investigate unusual topics for writing research. My most peculiar recent experience:

Sometimes, research leads to unexpected places. The weirdest thing I looked up was how ancient people brushed their teeth. It felt odd but added depth to my story. What about you?

When writing about a specific time period or culture, details like clothing can greatly enhance the authenticity of your narrative. It helps readers visualize characters and their environments. It’s a reminder that every detail counts in storytelling, and sometimes the most unusual topics can provide the richest material for character development.

That's a fun question! It's hard to pick just one, but here's a contender for "wierdest thing I had to look up" for writing research:
The mating habits of the anglerfish.
Let me tell you, it's... unique.
The Basics: In some deep-sea anglerfish species, the males are significantly smaller than the females.
The Bizarre Mating: The male actually bites into the female's body and fuses with her, becoming essentially a parasitic appendage that provides sperm.
Definitely not something you expect to encounter while researching a typical topic!

That's such an exciting milestone, and I can imagine how fun it must have been to bring it to life. As for weird research, the Soviet maternity clothing is definitely a unique one! I can top that with researching the "mating habits of the anglerfish" for a story once—it's a wild one, with males fusing to the females like living parasites. Definitely not something you'd expect to need for a children's book, but that's the magic of writing, right?

Haha, that’s brilliant, anglerfish mating is definitely a contender for the weirdest research topic ever! But 1980s Soviet maternity wear is a close second. Shows how writing takes us down some wild rabbit holes. What’s the strangest thing you had to look up?
