Merit badges for writers; now featuring your shiny brains

I've been standing quietly in the back recently, notebook in hand, seeing if any of the NB forum topics jumped out at me as something I'd completely missed while working on the set of merit badges for writers I've been posting on my blog. The forum's inspired me to add several badges to the list, including at least one that should've been so obvious I would've kicked myself if I'd left it out.

I won't keep throwing links in this thread since I'm posting a new merit badge for writers every weekday, but if you want to check out the blog it's at http://badger.dinorodeo.com. Today's badge is for proofreading, and I got a little sidetracked with a short love letter to proofreaders as well.

Thanks for letting me borrow a cup of zeitgeist, everyone. I'll see you around the forum!

Today's post looks at the time considerations of beginning a novel length project:

Novel Writing and Commitment
Mark wrote:It’s important to love your story. You don’t always have to be ecstatic about sitting down and typing, and there is every chance you may hate your characters and the whole idea by the time you’re giving your first reading with a hard bound first edition in hand, but there needs to be something driving you to chisel away at the work day after day. Non-writers will of course have the opinion that it’s an idyllic life of typing a few thousand words each morning before strolling to the café to converse with other artist types. It’s easy, right? Just string a few pretty sentences together, and after a few months you have a book.

Of course! I have one every weekday, and today's is a great critique of my current query, but even better is going to be tomorrow's guest blog post by Katie of Creepy Query Girl!

This one may not jive with everyone, but it's something I've been sort of turned off by when browsing blogs recently:
Keeping Your Rough Drafts Private
Mark wrote:Something I’ve noticed around the aspiring author blog scene is the posting of writing from a work in progress, usually accompanied by a disclaimer along the lines of “this is totally first draft, but I’m posting it anyways.” While I can understand that blogging is a form of catharsis for many people, and that posting work will often bring positive feedback from your friends, family, and other people too polite to post negative comments, I have to wonder why anyone would post what is in all likelihood the worst example of their talent as a writer.
I'm keen to hear contrarywise in the comments.
