I lean toward agreement with seriamcconnell in regard to adult guidance for young adults. Potter's adult guides are at times evasive, at times intrusive, at times absent, at times authoritarian, and a whole gamut of adult patronization. As part of coming of age rites, he learns that it is he who must navigate the passage into adulthood on his own without parental guidance. The lessons he learns most are that no one has all the answers, that he must learn to think consciously, critically for himself and suffer the consequences of trial and error along with enjoy the privileges and respect the obligations of adulthood.
