I don't mean to imply imprecise prologue or prelude labeling is right or wrong. It's a writer's and possibly an editor's choice free to make. It's done. It will continue to be done. I do mean knowing the differences and the insights their distinctions make for composing them benefits writers, and perhaps will more deeply engage readers.

I might use a ballpeen to drive nails, a framing hammer to cold shape sheetmetal, as imperfect at doing those jobs as they are. I wouldn't use either to break up a reluctant boulder. I have a hammer drill for that task. I loaned it to Dad for some masonry work he needed to do. What took him hours to drill a few molly anchors into a brickwall with a conventional drill took him moments to finish dozens with the hammer drill.
