Apple Tablet Rumor: Publishers get 70%?

Post by Nathan Bransford » December 9th, 2009, 3:51 pm

“Apple will split revenue 30/70 (Apple/publisher); give the same deal to all comers; and not request exclusivity. We believe the typical Kindle/publisher split is 50/50, rising to 30/70 if Kindle is given ebook exclusivity.”

If this pans out and publishers are still allowed to set their own list prices this could be a great thing for publishers and authors. FYI, typically with physical stores the split between publisher and bookstore is (roughly) 50/50.

Whenever Apple finally gives us the tablet, they will own e-publishing. This is because Apple has the mindset and clout (from reinventing the music business model) to propose and negotiate deals publishers have not even considered. And of course, Apple will sell the coveted eBook device too.

According to Reiner, the tablet will have a 10.1-inch multitouch LCD display and a price of $1,000.

Apple said what? For $1,000 this thing had better write my books for me.

Apple's brilliant.

What's great about this upcoming wars isn't just the percentages, but the marketing.

I've heard Sony ads for their reader about 7 times this week so far. By association, that also is advertsiment for books and reading in general. It promotes all the right things, imho. :)

And wouldn't it be interesting if the real battle that's brewing is between Apple (will we now have iBooks.com, like iTunes.com?) and Google, who looks dead set on taking over the rights to virtually every book it can get its hands on. The Kindle may start looking (amazingly) like old technology real soon.

What does the Apple gadget do besides ebooks for $1,000?

I think eReading will go either one of two directions, but i'm not sure which one yet...
(1) something like a Netbook, but maybe slightly more portable/less computerish that can do basic computing (word processing, spreadsheets, presentations) with a small keyboard (maybe slide out?), do movies and music, internet, eBooks, and be connected to 3G at all times...

OR

(2) We will see companies putting out a very cheap, but simple eReader that costs as little as let's say $49-99, which will basically be like the sony Ereader is now.

both would ahve advantages.

I know lots of people love their ereaders, I'm interviewing one this week who's a Kindle-lover. But they don't do enough somehow.

I've actually found myself doing a lot of reading on my iPhone, even though it can be irritating, depending on the way the text is formatted, but when it works it's quite good.

I always assumed the future would be convergence of some kind, the one-gadget-that-connects-you-to-the-big-network where you can access and manipulate data of all kinds seamlessly. But maybe I'm dreaming.
