Google Reader – Going, going – GONE!

Post by longknife » March 14th, 2013, 8:03 pm

I clicked on Google Reader this morning to check the blogs I follow to be told it would be gone July 1st

Alternatives are available, see http://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/2013 ... s/1986865/

I checked out Feedly http://www.feedly.com and it quickly and easily transferred all my Reader feeds. Actually in a nicer format than Reader.

Another is Pulse https://www.pulse.me/ While I didn't log on, it appears to be quite user friendly.

A third is Flipboard @ http://flipboard.com/ It appears to be more for mobile devices than desktops.

And, of course Twitter @ https://twitter.com/ which I didn't even bother to check out.

For those who use(d) Google Reader at work behind a Fun Police barricade and on anchient iterations of IE (Ie7 here!!), who can't run those new funky website at work....

I recommond FeedDemon lite 4.1

...just installed it here at work and wasn't blocked by Administrator privaleges, looks nigh on identical to Reader, Has a few glitches in terms of updating through said firewall (you have to close and re-open the entire program to get the RSS feeds of websites your firewall normally blocks), and has the added advantage of openign the websites directly in the window.....but yeah it's doing the identical job of Reader and looks the same too.

Two out of my three Thumbs up

Thank you very much. I quit Feedly as it often doesn't show all my feeds and went to FeedDemon which appears to be like its own web browser.

It sucks so much that Google is shutting it down. I've yet to see any alternative that worked as nicely as Google Reader + iGoogle (which is also going). Think I may just build my own, bleh
