My not-so-special trick to help me when I get stuck planning: http://claudiea.blogspot.com/2011/01/un ... tline.html

Margo. There is a surplus: http://http.com// in the "Kay Patterson" reference link.
How much do you really know about how a city works, how people influence and are influenced by a city, and what the problems of a city are?
I believe it depends on the story. I used to write and detail how the city works, how people influeced by a city (Usually in fantasy), but sometimes I skip this sort of descriptions as it's meaningless in the story (Usually in sci-fi). Urban fantasy... well, it's also depends on your story. I've read some really good urban fantasies where the city was actually a tertiary background element. And I also read some where the detailed city was a primary element.

Ah, thank you. Fixed that now.

Hmm, I think you might misunderstand what I'm intending with this. It's not about description or detail level. It's about where or not the urban environment is going to realistically affect the plot and mirror the internal conflict.

The first in a short series of posts on the workings and issues of a city and how to use these as a mirror for the characters' internal conflict. This one focuses on environmental concerns in a city:

Really excited that later this month I'll be having two great guest posts on the dystopian city and the historical city!
