NY Times Will Rank E-book Bestsellers

Post by Nathan Bransford » November 10th, 2010, 10:18 pm

Pretty big news:
In an acknowledgment of the growing sales and influence of digital publishing, The New York Times said on Wednesday that it would publish e-book best-seller lists in fiction and nonfiction beginning early next year.

The lists will be compiled from weekly data from publishers, chain bookstores, independent booksellers and online retailers, among other sources.

If that's not a sign of the times, I don't know what is... Could be good for self-published eBook authors, too. Potentially boost sales, and one more way to catch the attention of traditional publishing if that's their goal.

This is a questionable endeavor. The veracity of their data and data sampling needs to be explained.
The lists will be compiled from weekly data from publishers, chain bookstores, independent booksellers and online retailers, among other sources.
Amazon, Apple, Barnes and Noble are not sharing data unless it is heavily edited and/or beneficial to them. And what data for ebook sales comes from either chain or indie bookstores? Anecdotal chit-chat?

Could be, but the NY Times makes money by having publishers buy advertising for books. There are no incentives for them to push indie authors, except in a Wednesday feature that few will read. Have they ever listed a self-published book in their traditional bestseller lists?

The best books are hardly ever best sellers. Word of mouth is a better metric.
