What genre do you read the most?
What genre do you read the most?
I realized I know alot about folks and what genre they write, but not what they read.
I'm interested - do we have alot of folks here that like literary fiction? Genre fiction? Fantasy? Sci Fi?
My favorite genres to read are Fantasy and YA (alittle embarrassing, but it's true.) Even better is good YA fantasy.
(I also like chick lit. I'll read cozy mysteries, very occasionally thrillers like Grisham and Brown, and never literary fiction, if I can help it, it makes me very sad).
Anyone else?

YA Fantasy and most stuff by Jane Austin. They're just the kind of books you *know* will have a good ending.
I'll also read chick lit but only by authors I know and trust.

Re: What genre do you read the most?
Right now I'm reading urban/contemporary fantasy almost exclusively. I came to the genre late and have a lot of catching up to do. Anything else is usually non-fiction. I've got BORN TO RUN and EATING ANIMALS waiting on my bookshelf right now, along with a few books on shamanism, resource management, and history.

Re: What genre do you read the most?
I've mostly read literary fiction. Lately, basically since a tiny child came into my life requiring feeding, attention and protection, I mostly read genre fiction, usually fantasy or sci fi.

Mostly literary or YA (typically urban fantasy or commercial/literary), with aspirations to write in both.

Re: What genre do you read the most?
I read mostly YA, but I'm all over the place. I read a lot of contemporary, fantasy, urban fantasy, steampunk, horror, sci-fi...especially YA sci-fi and steampunk. There's not enough of it!
My current TBR pile looks like this:
Behemoth by Scott Westerfeld (Historical/Steampunkish YA) - Reading
Wildthorn by Jane Eagland (Corset wearing historical! YA)
Zombies: A record year of the infection by Don Roff, Chris Lane (Horror illustrated Not YA)
The House of Dead Maids by Clare B. Dunkle (Horror, Historical YA)
The Replacement by Brenna Yovanoff (Horror/Fantasy YA)
John Belushi is Dead by Kathy Charles (Contemporary YA)
The Windup Girl by Paolo Bacigalupi (Sci-fi? Near future dystopian? Not YA)
I tend not to read much about faeries anymore though. I've hit my fairy limit and need a break. I also don't read about vampires. It isn't even that I'm burned out on them, I just prefer my vampires scary and right now they are going through a very not-scary phase. So I'm waiting till the pendulum swings back around and we can get more Dracula and less Vampy Boyfriend.

If my book gets published, Sommer, I'll give you a heads up. There's a vampire, but he's more your classic Nosferatu vamp than a brooding, handsome type. ;)
Mostly I read urban fantasy, but being burned out on those tough-as-nails, sarcastic female leads *and* the hot vampire thing, the pickings are slim. I also dip into pure fantasy and sci-fi. And whenever Child & Preston come out with a new Agent Pendergast book, I'm there.

Oh yes please! I don't know about anyone else, but I kind of like my monsters to be a bit more monstery. I'm kind of over the Hair-Gelled-Hottie-Monster-of-Legend-and-Myth thing. There are roots people, and we should get back to them.Jessa wrote:If my book gets published, Sommer, I'll give you a heads up. At least for a while.

Re: What genre do you read the most?
Funny you would mention this. After doing quite a bit of monster research, I was thinking about blogging on all the cool traditional lore out there that never gets used. I don't have a problem with silver bullets used on werewolves and getting turned by a bite, for instance, but the silver thing is fairly modern and the bite infection was actually a pretty rare belief. There's so much more out there untouched...at least until I'm done with it. :)Sommer Leigh wrote:Oh yes please! My apologies, though. I do believe I'm going to make all my monsters wear hair gel. Well, maybe not the trolls or the ghouls.

I wanna read it too! I just read some more into Norse and Irish mythology and there are so many amazing, terrifying myths that would so refreshing to see!! One of these days I think I might try my hand at that...<wheels turning>Sommer Leigh wrote:Tell me when you post this! I want to read it!Margo wrote: Funny you would mention this. For me, I love a good sword-and-sorcery fantasy but I'm really getting into the urban fantasy as well. (I just finished the Dresden Files series and am DYING for another.) I've been known to read other genres - classics, mostly - but I tend to get really bored. I like some magic and myth in my stories.
