What's your favorite song that tells a story?

Post by Nathan Bransford » September 28th, 2010, 8:46 pm

There are so many great ballads and songs that tell whole stories, from Hurricane by Bob Dylan to Rocky Raccoon by the Beatles. What's your favorite?

I'm going to have to go with the Mariner's Revenge Song by the Decemberists. It doesn't surprise me at all that the lead singer, Colin Meloy, is going to have a MG novel published:

The first video I clicked on has an explanation of the story, so I guess I won't explain. Anyway, my favorite song with a story is "Me and the Moon" by Something Corporate.

Great topic.

EDIT:
I watched everyone's. Cool.

Nathan - I watched yours - wow. Very funny, and just awful. Clever. Lol.

One of the mad ones - that was sad!

Steve - love that song.

Cheeky - very fun.

I'm going to give a nod to Alice's resturant by Arlo Guthrie. ha!

But my favorite isn't profound or sad or anything. It's just fun. The Devil Went Down to Georgia by the Charlie Daniels Band

I absolutely loved these. Mariner's Revenge was hilarious. It sort of reminded me of an Irish drinking song.

My favorite story song is Fred Jones Part 2 by Ben Folds.

Being from Georgia and truly appreciating a good country song, I have to go with, "The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia," by Reba McEntire. Love it. It's sad, depressing, thrilling, all wrapped up in one song.

Oooh! Good topic, Nathan.

One of my favourites is We're Going To Be Friends - covered by Jack Johnson. It's very fitting for me, considering I went to kindergarten, primary school, and high school with the guy I married. I walked down the aisle to this song at our wedding :)

But as far as comical storytelling is concerned, Jonathan Couton's Skullcrusher Mountain is one of my very favourite songs.

This is hard, but I'm going to go with I Hung My Head by Johnny Cash.

There are so many...

I think Jimmy Buffet and Robert Earl Keen, Jr do it best, or maybe they just have more than other singer/song writers.

"Keep it Together", by Guster. It's got a lovely melody and a bizarre topic for a pop song (building a colony from scratch and then holding it).

Could I simplify things and say "Anything by Jarvis Cocker and Pulp"? No?

Well, here's a lovely example of Pulp's work.

Won't say they're my favorite because, really, there are far too many songs... but these make me laugh.
