Query - SOUL SLAYER, Adult Fantasy

Post by ViditM » May 4th, 2023, 5:08 pm

Dear (Agent Name),

Deymon murdered the woman he loves. The fallen god, Zagan, can bring her back to life.
Five thousand years ago, mortals killed the god, Zagan and stole his immortal atman. But gods do not die.
Deymon, a reckless and callous killer, must awaken this fallen god to resurrect his beloved. The only way to revive the god is to kill the mortals who channel Zagan’s power and rip the god’s atman from their souls.
On his journey to redeem his soul, Deymon must vanquish not only the mightiest mortals in his world but also the Scion of the wind god who has descended to the mortal world to stop him.

SOUL SLAYER is a 127,000-word multi-POV adult fantasy novel and stands alone with the potential for a series of works in the same universe. It is perfect for readers who enjoy mystical tales steeped in mythology, political intrigue and battles between divine beings—those who fancy the works of Joe Abercrombie, Mark Lawrence, and N.K. Jemisin would love this book.

I have completed a certification in ‘Creative Writing’ from Wesleyan University, and I freelance as a ghostwriter on ‘The Urban Writers’ platform. I was recently named the ‘Author of the Year 2022 (Editor’s Choice)’ by the writing platform, ‘StoryMirror’.

Thank you for your time, and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Hi Vidit,

I really enjoy stories about gods and demons, so the plot is something I'd be drawn to as a reader. But I think there are some missed opportunities in the query letter. My constructive criticism, to be taken with a shaker of salt:

- The first paragraph is not structured in a natural way. The first line is about Deymon, then you have two lines about Zagan, then we go back to Deyman again. I would do this chronologically. Keep the first two sentences as an overarching pitch, but then explain how Deymon murdered the woman he loves before saying anything about Zagan. That way, you can establish the motivation for Deyman -- why he is journeying out to slaughter a bunch of people and wake Zagan.

- Relatedly, the description of the story is really short. More space would allow you to put in the detail that can help hook someone into wanting to read the sample pages.

- The purpose of Deymon's journey is unclear. Is it to "resurrect his beloved" or "to redeem his soul," or both?

- You don't need the commas between "god" and "Zagan." You can also delete the apostrophes in the bio paragraph. The capitalization is enough.

- The Scion of the wind god kind of comes out of nowhere, and I don't have a good sense of what it is or what it wants or how it plays into the story. I would either expand a little or remove.

Hope these notes help. Congrats on completing your story, and I hope you find a home for Soul Slayer!

This query outlines a compelling premise for a dark fantasy novel with potential. Here's a possible revision incorporating the safety guidelines:

Dear (Agent Name),

In a chilling act of desperation, Deymon, a ruthless warrior haunted by love's loss, seeks to resurrect his beloved through the forbidden magic of a fallen god. Five millennia ago, mortals stole Zagan's immortal essence, leaving the once-mighty deity fractured and dormant. Now, Deymon must navigate a perilous path, one paved with the souls of those who channel Zagan's stolen power.

Amidst treacherous political machinations and clashes with formidable warriors, Deymon's quest pits him against a formidable foe: the Scion of the wind god, descended to thwart his dark designs. Can Deymon redeem his soul while defying divine judgment, or will his quest for forbidden power consume him utterly?
