Re: Writer Conferences
I'm also attending SCBWI LA - my first big conference! I attended the regional IL SCBWI conference last fall, and that was great. I'm taking the YA Voice workshop and the MG workshop - anyone in those?

I've been to this one before. You'll have a great time. So many creative people in the same space together, it's awesome. But bring a sweater. It's FREEZING in those dang conference rooms.Susan Quinn wrote:I'm also attending SCBWI LA - my first big conference! I attended the regional IL SCBWI conference last fall, and that was great. Susan,
maybegenius and I will be there. I'm going to start a new thread about the conference in case anyone else is going but hasn't checked this one. I didn't get into the YA voice workshop, boo.

Re: Writer Conferences
I just found out I'm going to the Rocky Mountain Fiction Writer's Conference in Denver this September. Turns out I'm a finalist in the writing competition. Woohoo!! The final judge is a certain well-known, well-respected local agent. The winner will be announced at the dinner Saturday night, so I guess I gotta go.
I haven't been a finalist in a writing competition for a couple of years. Kind of doing a little happy dance. :)
If anyone else is going to be at this conference, I'd love to meet up to say hi.
**Update: I won :)

Thanks Susan. And how did Scbwi go? Did it live up to your expectations?

Re: Writer Conferences
SCBWI was fantastic - actually blew my expectations away, and they were pretty high to begin with. Although I did find that much of the "informational" type workshops weren't terribly informative for me. But that's just because I follow Nathan's blog (and others in the industry)! :) But SCBWI does a good job of offering value to a wide range of writers from new to published and beyond. The speakers were inspirational. I was able to meet lots of my online friends in RL, which was awesome. And some of the workshops with experienced authors were incredibly helpful, in a craft sense.
p.s. if you go, make sure you sign up for the manuscript consult - totally worth the money.

Julia Quinn gave a dialogue workshop at the Tucson Festival of Books this year (February I think) and it was great. Very funny, informative and motivating.
I don't think anyone else mentioned this but The Festival of Books will be back in Tucson March next year and although it's not the same as a writer's conference they do have a LOT of workshops run by well-known published authors - they also have a lot of authors signing/giving public talks.
For anyone living this way it's well worth going to - plus it's FREE! So if you can't justify the expense of some of the conferences it's worth attending. I went to a bunch of workshops over the two days and learned a lot!

Re: Writer Conferences
I thought I would mention that registration is open for the Pikes Peak Writers Conference to be held in Colorado Springs, CO, April 28 - May 1. I've found this to be a well organized and really fun conference in the past. Anyway, I'll be there. Signed up for the dreaded pitch session. *shivers*
