book signings

I'm interested in hearing indie authors' experiences when it comes to book signings. I'm readying my novels for self-pubbing next year, and would definitely like some tips in this area. How does one go about the whole process? If a bookstore agrees to host a signing for you, do you then order copies of your own book to bring to the signing? Would the bookstore then add your book to their list and get a percentage of your sales?
