Got the contract, did the revisions ... and editor quits

Post by RLS » June 1st, 2010, 3:01 pm

Is this common? My agent assures me it's all going to work out. No word yet on who the new editor will be. Meanwhile, I rocked those revisions and was really looking forward to the one person who knew the 'before' and the editorial letter ... to see the 'after'.
Now, of course, I'm imagining all sorts of scenarios: they kill the book, the book is delayed, they assign someone far less knowledgable.

Also, I heard about this from my agent, but so far, my editor (former editor) hasn't called. This was made public on Friday. Do editors disappear into the night similar to the unavailable, bad boy artist types with potential, that I used to encounter every now and then.
Whatever.
I think I'll go to the gym.

I have no knowledge of the internal workings of a publishing house, so all I can say is - you have my support and sympathy. That sucks!

On the other hand, if your agent isn't concerned, that's a good sign!

Really sorry to hear that RLS, though I'm sad to say this is very common. It's one reason why agents have evolved to be the point of commonality for authors - one author can easily go through two, three, four editors over the course of their career. But though it can be unsettling for the author it's not a book-killer or anything like that. Hang in there!

Ouch.

But hey, you're a lot closer to getting published than I am. Besides, if your MS was good enough to end up on an editor's desk, I don't think you have too much to worry about. :D

Update:
'Old' editor called yesterday and was very gracious. She told me she would read my revisions and offer feedback, which I very much appreciate. She also gave me the name of my new editor and said I was in good hands. I've done my google stalking, I mean research, and I'm optimistic.

Further update:
I never made it to the gym, but I did make it to the oreos aisle, which is also good, I think.

Oreos...mmmm! At the bottom of this page there's a 'Delete all board cookies' option. I wonder if you can delete them after you've eaten them...

I fell in love with this statement. It is awesome :-) I am also glad to hear you're more optimistic and things are going to be ok.
May the word counts be ever in your favor. http://www.sommerleigh.com

I haven't been on the forums lately, so imagine my surprise by the kind words of others. Thanks for liking my oreo infatuation. (Note the fat part)
Seriously, I love the love.
Especially since t's Sunday night and I made me no art this weekend. (now there's a sentence) Translation: I'm cranky.
Alas, tomorrow ... back to the gym. Back to the page. (Hey, was that from Gone With the Wind?)
