Uploading PDF to Amazon Kindle

Hello all, I'm writing because I'm wondering if anyone has tips for uploading to Amazon Kindle. I have written a story, illustrated pictures within the story, and scanned it into my computer as a PDF document. Amazon does not like this, however, and will not process the story unless it is in a different format such as Word. Are there any programs that can help me in this process? I've used adobe and it does not copy the words correctly and changes the font of the story.
