Bloodletting and Miraculous Cures by Vincent Lam, Giller Prize Winner.

Reading all the Giller Prize Winners over the next while, every single one I've read has been so unique and really worth the effort to ignore my children to read them. Jesting. Of course I ignore my hubby to read them.

The first short story in B and MC was awesome, very funny with the quirks of the characters. It hits you out of nowhere with a serious abuse of one of the main characters. Its a common (unfortunately) issue but is dealt with in an original way.

Bloodletting is excellent, though a little bitter at times. Well worth the read. I picked it up because he was a friend of my sister's in university (plus, you know, it looked good). Happy I did so.

I am very interested in the rest of the short stories, his writing style really has me hooked. Its funny with the Giller Prize winning books they are all so different.

It's almost a novel in stories, really, as the characters are constant and the episodes seemingly sequential. It gives a certain integrity to the book as a whole.

Started THE ROAD, along with THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT at the same time because I was on a plane. THE ROAD is amazing. I am only about 100 pages in but the prose is poetic like no contemporary novel I've read. It is as cryptic and beautiful as Faulkner but doesn't give me a headache or force me to re-read passages 3 times. THE KIDS is really interesting in it's premise and in that it's memoir of the same lives told by four different siblings with different memories.

Yes, I picked that up from a description of the novel I read somewhere. It's similar to "Who do you think you are?" by Alice Munro. I also love that book, and find novels that have short stories following the same characters are "my own personal brand of heroin" ;)

I'm finishing Still Alice by Lisa Genova. It's SO good and is a powerful look at a woman's decline into Alzheimer's, although it's not as depressing as it sounds. I'll warn you that everyone in my book club was convinced they had Alzheimer's symptoms while reading it -- myself included!

just finished Hunger Games and picked up Catching Fire today. Love.

Matthew Reilly's Scarecrow...

I like the light tone of the book, not too hard on prose and such. Just a simple action-run-action-run-action novel.

Also have Lawrence Watt-Evan's The Annals of the Chosen trilogy queuing next and Peter V Brett's The Painted Man after that.

Just finished Richard (mid initial in the U.S.: K) Morgan's Altered Carbon and have The Many Deaths of the Firefly Brothers by Thomas Mullen poised to crack. Perhaps I'll let it breathe for a moment first.

A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin. Barely getting through it, and I'm an avid fantasy reader!
