Share Your Summer Reading List

Is it just me or does reading in the summer feel different than reading any other time of year? I crave a very specific type of story in the summer. My usual tastes go out the window and I hunger for road trip stories and stories about summer parties and crushes and sunburns and all those things that go along with these few months.

So, in no particular order, here's my current and constantly changing "Summer Reads" list that I'm making my way through.

The Storyteller by Antonia Michaelis (Finished - best book of the year, all genres, hands down)
Bittersweet by Sarah Ockler (Finished)
This is Not a Test by Courtney Summers (Finished - best hardcore YA zombie book ever written)
Insurgent by Veronica Roth (Currently Reading)
Reunited by Hillary Weisman Graham
Code Name Verity by Elizabeth E. Wein
Second Chance Summer by Morgan Matson
The Disenchantments by Nina LaCour
Thou Shalt Not Road Trip by Antony John
Black Heart by Holly Black
The List by Siobhan Vivian
Where Things Come Back by John Corey Whaley
Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo

Summer of 2011 Favorite Read: Amy & Roger's Epic Detour by Morgan Matson - Best Road Trip Book Ever Written. I still listen to 80% of the songs I discovered from this book.

I read primarily YA. If you have any awesome summer reads to recommend, please do. I'm a HUGE fan of road trip stories.
They don't have to be new and if they are relased this summer, that's fine too.

What's on your summer reading list?

Twist by Dannika Dark (finished)
The Forever Girl by Rebecca Hamilton (current)
King's Blood by Daniel Abraham (probably next)

After that I'm not sure what's next. I don't have as much of a concrete plan as you, Sommer. It is kinda cool to see things lined up like that, though.

My reading tastes don't usually change during the summer. I tend to read the same type of stories no matter what the weather is like outside.

That being said, my reading list for the near future (which are really just the books on the top of my TBR pile):

Dhampir by Barb and J.C. Hendee (currently reading)
The Son of Neptune by Rick Riordan
The Red Pyramid and The Throne of Fire, also by Rick Riordan
Gunmetal Magic by Ilona Andrews (as soon as it's released on July 31st)
Canticle by Ken Scholes
The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman
The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett
The Way of Shadows by Brent Weeks
Magic to the Bone by Devon Monk
Hyperion by Dan Simmons
...and a few Terry Pratchetts every now and then, when I'm in that kind of mood.

Sommer, I don't have any road trip type books (not something I tend to enjoy) but I do have a fantastic travelogue recommendation: The Sex Lives of Cannibals by J. Maarten Troost. It's his story of the time he lived on a tiny "tropical" island in the Pacific, and it's seriously the funniest book I've ever read. It would be an awesome summer-get-away type book. :)

My to-read list is never ending, but I'll share the next few in the succession.

Crewel by Gennifer Albin
Every Day by David Levithan
Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas
Ruins of Lace by Iris Anthony
What's left of Me by Kat Zhang
Pushing the Limits by Katie McGarry
Burn for Burn by Siobahn Vivian and Jenny Han

Also, Sommer, do you mean Insurgent?

Haha. Yeah, I thought that might be the case.

I love these lists, I use them to look for things I want to read.

I'm about to start on Meg Cabot's next book.
I'm in the middle of Susan Quinn's debut YA novel, which I'm enjoying.
I've decided to re-read Asimov's Foundation series.
Flat Out Love by Jessica Park was recommended by Bezos (Amazon's CEO), so I'm going to check that out.
I saw a reference for Gentleman Prefer Blondes by Anita Loos on Passive Guy's blog, and realized I'd never read it, so that's on my list.
I'm thinking of reading something by Maureen Johnson, because I haven't yet.
Someone recommended Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson (Sci Fi) so I'm going to check that out.
And J.K. Rowling's new book, when it's released!

Summer fun! :)

Hm hm, let's see... Bold is those I've finished. Those that aren't go in no particular order.

Uglies, Scott Westerfeld
The Last Light of the Sun, Guy Gavriel Kay
The Great Gatsby (Not read yet, if you can believe that)
Under Haven, Guy Gavriel Kay (yes, again)
Straits of Galahesh, Brad Beaulieu
The Hobbit -- because I have to before the movie is out. :)
Anything by Henning Mankell. -- Been too long. I miss Wallander and a solid mystery book.
The first of my Sherlock Holmes collection. Got 'em all, haven't read any yet.

Then it's likely I either go buy more Kay (I want them all, even those I borrowed and have read already) or get my hands on the rest of the Uglies series. I'd rather not have to buy the latter, but the libraries here don't have lots of English book.

Claudie- I think I have an extra set of the Uglies series if you want me to send them. I, um, liked the new covers better so I bought the new covers. My husband likes to say, "There's something wrong with you." Yeah. I know.

Well...

Top Girls, Caryl Churchill
The Handmaid's Tale, Margaret Atwood
Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit, Jeanette Winterson
A Streetcar Named Desire, Tennessee Williams
And Still I Rise, Maya Angelou
Translations, Brian Friel
I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings, Maya Angelou
The Kite Runner, Khaled Hosseini

But this is compulsory summer reading for my course. Oh well. A book's a book. I've read "The Handmaid's Tale" but I can't remember whether or not I liked it...

Me too I love The Handmaid's Tale! Although I've read like 10 of her books and none of them are bad. She's got more writing talent in her thumb than I think all of us have combined in our whole beings.

Haha, Sommer, that'd be great but if they charge as much from US to Canada as they do from Canada to US, I can guarantee that posting the books will cost you as much (or almost) as I'd pay buying them. It sucks but I remember when I shipped Winds to you, it was something like 15-20 bucks.
