On Tell Great Stories, it's Hot Dystopian Summer Nights week!

Why are we still obsessed with Dystopian fiction? http://sommerleigh.com/archives/3998

Deep roots bind the publishing agencies to their way of doing things and the new e-publishing paradigm offers a way to grow wings. As a successful e-publisher, I expected attacks from traditionalists who are fighting change (using dirty tactics such as slandering e-publishers who charge fees for actual work produced without understanding the paradigm), but I was surprised and delighted to receive an attack from an author.

Surprised because I've done my homework and cut my rates to provide the best service I can and still earn enough to buy peanut butter. I provide a list of renowned editors, marketers, and my books receive distribution to bookstores, libraries, Amazon, and a full range of devices world-wide. For cheap. I would have thought an author would embrace this concept.

Delighted because her attack reveals an ignorance in general about e-publishing and allows me an opportunity to educate authors who really do want readers to read their books, in spite of their holding onto a decaying image of "being an Author"--an image which entails receiving oodles by way of advances for their wonderful book, having adoring fans lined up at bookstores, having a propitiating agent at their feet begging for the next chapter while they slog down a Bloody Mary saying "Can't you see? I'm blocked! They'll just have to wait!" and then slamming the door as they drive off in their respective Jaguars. Gee. That was a nice image once. But the true image nowadays is more about social networking, the author doing the marketing, while the agents and publishers take the bulk of the royalties. So e-books and POD come swooping in like an eagle and land on that tree, offering a way to fly to the next level. The tree doesn't like it.
