I probably have a new blog post up since I last advised I'd updated. But, more importantly, our own February Grace has a new blog post up at http://februarywriter.blogspot.com/ in which it is revealed that sometimes, just sometimes, success comes from the slush pile.

I'm new to this forum and excited to be a part of the writing/blogging community. I have a blog I try to post to on a weekly basis, sometimes twice weekly, depending on what drama is going on. The blog is mostly about this large, dysfunctional family, I started ... years ago. I also include my own memories and random thoughts. My mystery novel, "Black Oynx" is nearing the finish line after two years, four months. Whew...the finish is soooo near.

I don't believe in magic, but I live in a magical world. http://ryanznock.blogspot.com/2010/07/i ... ve-in.html

Anyone have any thoughts on magic? Post 'em please.

And Hillary, congratulations! Sorry I missed the party. I can't find it on a cursory scan of your blog, but what's your book about? I feel a sudden kinship with you because I too sometimes just sit with the headphones on. :)

Thanks, Ryan. There wasn't much of a party, mostly because I was exhausted after the whirlwind of offer, freak out, alert other agents, have them ask me to do things, freak out, talk on phone to live agent, FREAK OUT, email other agents, accept offer, freak out...it gets kind of circular after that.

But I did just finish a post of the grind that led up to the offer. It probably should have been a bit happier, with some "squee"ing, I believe it's called, but I'm still in shock. And I want other aspiring writers to see that grinding along can move you a step in the right direction.

HUNTING IN THE DARK is an urban fantasy. You'll find a preliminary query stuck somewhere in the feedback forum. Someday I'll reopen my query file - it still has a kind of Pandora's box feel to it - and post that last, successful version.

I opened my blog today, saw that I hadn't opened it in two months, that the end of "The Professional" never got posted. I posted the conclusion.

Very not good at blogging, I think.

Any thoughts on magic? Aliester Crowley, 'nuff said. For a depraved, deviant, disturbed drug addict, the "Wickedest Man in the World" was a damn genius. I highly recommend reading at least some of his work if you want to create a system of magic for your books. MAGICK IN THEORY AND PRACTICE is a pretty good place to start, and one shouldn't neglect MAGICK WITHOUT TEARS. 777 is useful, particularly since most current editions of it also include SEPHER SEPHIROTH, a useful guide for seeing connections between symbols, something all writers (should) try to do. And as long as you've gone that far, why not read Frazier's GOLDEN BOUGH--the abridged edition, of course.

My thoughts on magic in books run along the really simple lines of "it must be internally consistent" and "it must make sense on its face." Without logic, or, perhaps, a set of rules to follow, I'm going to be turned off. The magic in books can be unreliable, or insanely powerful, or both depending on who wields it, but it must make sense to me if the author is going to explain it. If the author just lets the magic happen, never tells me HOW it works, that's cool too, so long as consistency is maintained.

And for the record: If you're going to explain your magic and rituals, I'll probably put your book back on the shelf, never pick it up again (I can't bring myself to throw away or burn books), and never buy any other thing you ever write if you rely on Wicca/"New Age" drivel to make your magical system. Yes, Melanie Rawn, I'm looking at you.

More thoughts available on request.
