The Job Hunt - Editor at Publishing House

Hi!

I searched all over the forums for an answer to my question and couldn't find it. I hope it's okay I started a new topic and this is the correct place to post it. I apologize if the answer to my question exists somewhere and I didn't spot it.

I graduated in June with my MFA in Creative Writing with an emphasis in Writing for Young People. Aside from working on sending out query letters to agents to get my novel published (and currently working on two other novels), my goal has always been to work my way up to becoming an editor for a publishing house. I have been doing extensive research looking for jobs and have only found internship positions in literary agencies. I fear that I may become stuck in these positions because literary agencies are much different than publishing houses (to my understanding). I need a better understanding on the process of working my way to my dream. Do you have any advice for a recent graduate and a fresh face to the publishing world? Any and all advice is more than welcome.

Thank you!
Haneen

Oftentimes working your way up through an internship in a role that might not be exactly like the one you eventually want. So I wouldn't shy away from applying for the agency internships, because not only might you find that you may enjoy the agenting world, but you'll also build connections that might get you closer to being an editor.

Keep an eye out on the Publishers Marketplace and MediaBistro job boards, set up an alert on indeed.com, and keep at it!
