Credits for research information

Post by MandyG » December 24th, 2020, 5:03 pm

Hi
I am currently writing a historical novel.

I am unclear how to credit the sources I am using for my research.

If I read an article on Google, and want to use some of the information in my book – not as a quote, but as background information (for example, in my historical novel, the ox wagon breaks down. I read an article on Google on how to fix a wagon wheel, and used some of this information interspersed among my own writing). Is it sufficient to list the article and author in my Acknowledgements, or do I actually need to get permission from the author of the article to use his information?
Additionally, if I want to use a quote from a famous author in my book (on the first page), do I first need to get permission from the author, or would it be sufficient to list his name after the quote?

Thanks,
Mandy
