Ten Rules for Writing

Post by ivanpope » February 21st, 2010, 10:42 am

The Guardian took Elmore Leonard's Ten Rules for Writing and then asked a whole bunch of writers for their ten rules. Wonderful reading, especially where the rules are in complete opposition to each other - 'never read other writers/ always read other writers'. Lots of well known writers, some gems in there.

There's a greatly amusing deal of subtext, verbal irony, and dramatic irony in play in those contradicting advices.

I loved reading these writers' rules! Here's one:

Helen Simpson

The nearest I have to a rule is a Post-it on the wall in front of my desk saying "Faire et se taire" (Flaubert), which I translate for myself as "Shut up and get on with it."

Thanks for posting the link.
