YA or Adult Novel?

Post by Trw78Writes » May 21st, 2010, 5:26 pm

I am writing a novel about two very different 18 year old girls who have horrific pasts but cross each other in a home for the mentally ill in which they become friends and sort of lovers, without the sex. They kiss several times and go into some exploration but not much. I don't know how I would pitch this book to an agent when I complete the draft and edits I intend to do. I always considered myself a literary writer, but this is bordering on YA and I'm not sure I'm ok with that. The narrator is speaking from a different time, well, the future, after both girls have long gone from that place. It's almost like the narrator is recalling their lives. Does that make a difference? I'm not sure, but any advice would be much appreciated!

Check out the site below...I'm attaching the link to the YA discussion boards. The postings at the top of the board (permanent postings) are AWESOME in helping with YA literature. It sounds like the story is YA, but if the voice is now adult, it wouldn't be YA. YA is usually told in the voice of a teen...I can't think of any that aren't. Good luck!
