When do I look for an Agent?

Post by lturn9 » June 26th, 2018, 5:40 pm

I was wondering when I should start contacting agents to see if they have any interest in my novel? At this point I am approximately 60% complete but could provide several chapters for review if desired. But I have no idea what the timing & procedure is for submission. Any thoughts?

Thanks -

My understanding is that one does not query agents until the novel is complete. Only then do they (and you) know that you can tell the whole story.

Depends on the agent. Some take unfinished novels. Also have you had professional editing? Everyone needs it. Have a look at Fiverr. There are great editors (and crap editors btw) and you can select one within your budget.

while it's great to be proactive and start thinking about agents, it's best to wait until you have a completed manuscript to submit. In the meantime, keep writing and polishing your work, and continue to research and educate yourself on the publishing industry. Best of luck with your novel!
