Re: Writer's Block

I try not to call it writer's block. It sounds too much like a disease or something. I just say, "I'm having a hard writing day." That way, it seems much more temporary, because (at least to me) it implies that tomorrow stands a good chance of being better. Also, if I'm having a hard time...

Re: Rules for Chapters

I have never really stressed about the length of my chapters. The shortest (and also the last) is only about 1000 words while the longest is about 8500 words. I place my chapter breaks where it feels right for me. I know that readers/agents/editors/publishers are all going to have different ideas wh...

Excertp - REVELATION: The Book of Angel.

Well. Now that Nathan has given us his blessing to post our excertps I thought I would be brave and post my opening scene for all to comment. Here goes... 1. EXILE (4,166) “For with much wisdom comes much sorrow. The More knowledge the more grief.” Ecclesiates 1:18 “Hey Angel, the doc wants ya. Must...

Re: Book trailers: who makes them, $$$, and are they worth it

I don't know how long book trailers have been around as I have only discovered them in the last couple of weeks. My feeling is that they are something faily new because for the most part what I have seen so far hasn't really (IMHO) done much to promote the book. Most in fact have turned me off... ei...

Re: I am vs. I'm and so on...

I started out with the formal long hand version in my novel. When I went back and read some of my work I thought if felt unnatural and have since added quite a few contractions. When I received a couple of reviews there were no comment for or against the use of contractions .... except this one: &qu...

Re: All the little symbols.

I assume you mean the symbols on the left side of the forums. Not sure about all of them. But if there is a star in the circle, it means you posted in that topic. If the color is red it means there is a new post since you last logged on. If it's blue, then their isn't any new posts since you last r...

Re: Query help: Waiting for April

I am no expert... grain of salt and all that. But before I start may I first say AUSSIE AUSSIE AUSSIE... It's great to see a fellow Australian sloggin away. G'day mate. Hi everyone! I have decided to bite the bullet and post this rough query. I am still in the process of editing, so please, PLEASE k...

Re: Query critique - Revelation

Ok. So I submitted my first try for critique and received some really nice compliments. One in particular gave me quite a high. If that is how it feels just to get a pat on the back, then heaven help me when I score the real deal. I also really appreciated the tweaking tips. But what do I do? I go t...

Re: Query critique - Revelation - REVISED.

BF, I read your first draft a few days ago; didn't comment because you were already revising. Now, having read the second draft, I just wanted to add confusion, and possibly frustration to the process! To me, the first attempt works better as a query. Short, clear and snappy - my opinion is it only...

Re: What works better for you: praise or critique?

For me it is both. I really, really, REALLY want praise, but I also know I NEED the crit too (so long as it is constructive, and thank goodness that has been the case for me at least 99% of the time). I really think the critique can be what tips scales.

I wonder if that is why Jodi Reamer is among the top 3 on my 'A' list.

Re: Query critique - Revelation - REVISED.

Due to reservations I have about my first revision containing to much plot information (it was more of a synopsis than a query), I have deleted it from this thread. Sorry for any inconvenience I may have caused. I will be posting a third try at a later date. Again, please accept my apologies. Happy ...

Re: Critique/Review Sites and Groups

I'm putting my hand up for a "share your work" thread in here too. I have tried a couple of various critique sites, but for some reason I find the people in this forum are a lot more trustworthy, friendly and most of all helpful and encouraging. As if Nathan didn't have enough on his plate.
