Re: Advice for a newbie to publishing?

Regan, go to duotrope.com They will list all sorts of periodicals, both print and electronic, and allow you to sort through them using different parameters (story length, genre, pay scales etc.). I have used the site several times but haven't had much luck yet, likely due to my genre and desire to b...

Re: Writing Procrastination via New Writing Projects

I suppose that it isn't so much procrastination as it is a desire not to waste what limited writing time I have. I'm no good at using 15 minutes here or fifteen minutes there to write or edit. I need that first 15 minutes just to figure out where I left off, so I am NOT going to waste my hour or two...

Re: Okay, be honest…how crappy is your first draft?

I'm not one of those people that write in a stream of consciousness and then return to fix basic issues later. No, while you kids are plowing your fields with your new-fangled tractors, I plod along behind my ox. Just one ox, not a team of oxen. A team of oxen would be too fast a means to make progr...

Re: Inspired by NB's blog post today...

This is a good topic, Charlotte49ers, one that I am going to have to give some thought to since I am almost at the point where I might need it.

Be careful, though, because if it is wildly succesful Nathan will probably move it to the "All Things Feedback" :)

Re: What happens when...

I had this happen to me when I was about forty pages in. The guy that was supposed to be the main character didn't have nearly the freedom to do things as his servant did, and the servant would still have unfettered access to everything the so-called main character knew, so, BOOM! New protagonist! I...

Re: Does your setting own you?

I have a very detailed map in my head regarding my setting. I can zoom in on the junction of the roads to the north, or I can zoom out to see where my protagonist's journey will take him. I can see the fish pond where he catches his lunch one day and the house of the woman he is interested in. Excep...

Re: Time to Fess Up - How Long Is It Taking You?

I have a "finished product" that has taken six years to complete. That may sound like a lot of time but I also wrote: * the start of a sequel (about 45K words) * the start of another book (about 65K words, this one will be a monster) * six short stories, which I have little hope of ever f...

Re: What do you "do"?

I'm a respiratory therapist... Interestingly, my current R&D project is an oxygen concentrator. A new and improved one? It would be nice if patients could run a nebulizer off a concentrator. They don't have enough pressure to do it now. So many patients go home with both an oxygen and a portabl...

Re: What's your favourite YouTube videos?

I...I'm going to come clean...I... OK, I love the Hitler videos on youtube, OK? There, I said it, and damn it, I meant it! For two years now, people have been taking a particular scene from the movie "Downfall" and adding new subtitles. One guy did one about the Toronto transit strike and ...

Re: New Forum Categories

Well, Nathan, I'm afraid you missed the mark on this whole reorganization scheme of yours. If you are going to go to the effort of breaking out the Feedback, the next logical step would have been to breakout the Procrastination Forum into its own logical subcategories: Cute Animals and New Pets TV s...

Re: What do you "do"?

I worked on helicopters for 20 years in the Navy, now I am involved in some fairly high-technology research and development engineering. I've worked on various gas separation and laser communications projects over the last ten years, since once you have researched a project and then developed a proj...

Re: Strong Female Characters

I've been lucky enough to know many strong women in my life, so it is easy for me to look at their qualities when it comes time to flesh out a character and borrow some of their attributes. As Sommer says, however, there are as with all humans the flaws. Balancing these makes a character that remain...

But I still don't think it does much.
