Re: Updated YA first page (Ronnie Gold) :)

Oh! I thought you were older (because you're a mother)! But yes, I still feel like a teenager in most respects, for sure.

Re: Nominate Your First Page for a Critique on the Blog

Genre: Contemporary YA Untitled As soon as I walk through this door, I will officially be a high school student, I thought. Finally. I stood outside the door of my first class, even though it was cold and drizzling. This was typical first day of school weather for Seattle – or in my case, Dumont, a ...

Re: Updated YA first page (Ronnie Gold) :)

lmitchell and wildheart, thank you for your input!

wildheart - I am basically still a teen.... (I'm 20, and rather sad not to have an excuse for teen angst anymore). So those teen girl emotions/insecurities are still very fresh in my memory. :)

Re: First Page YA: opinions on voice and technique appreciated

I like it. Awesome voice. I think it's spot on, but there were a few minor things I wanted to edit, so here you go: Could this ordeal be any more awkward? My jaw clenched so tight I worried my teeth might crack , and my mother’s dental insurance sucked so , of course, that would be just my luck. Cra...

Re: Embarassing lines in my book

Um, yeah, I have one every bit as good as that, but it's too horrid to post. I was trying to get inventive with a verb to replace 'grab' and came up with a turn of phrase that belongs only in hardcore porn, so sayeth a major editor. I'll let everyone imagine what the phrase might have been. It's on...

Re: Is present tense ever okay?

Of course present tense is okay, as illustrated by the examples everyone just gave you. But for me, as a reader, present tense is usually a deal breaker. I can't say exactly why, but it doesn't read as well as past tense. It seems a little amateur to me. The only book I remember actually finishing t...

Re: Words I Can't Stop Using

Wow, that Wordle thing was fun! And it was quite pretty... until I unchecked "remove common words"! Now there's a huge "THE" splashed across the page, followed closely by "I". But I'm not gonna worry about those two too much... When I uncheck that, my most common word b...

Re: Time to Fess Up - How Long Is It Taking You?

I'm working on my first novel. I'm almost done with the first draft and it's been 14 months. I'll definitely be editing by the end of this month! Oh and it's about 85k words.
