Re: Foreign Agents
Steve - LMAO bcomet - for me, American agents are foreign. I've been querying them and just finding information online. I suggest for other countries, search 'literary agent in (country)'. Other than that, most websites will specify if the agency doesn't represent foreign writers. If there's nothing...

Re: Writer's conferences?
Are there any during June/July next year? It doesn't matter where as I'll be traveling anyway. And are any of you planning on attending them?

Re: Gender roles: Emotionally weak heroines
I suppose there's always been a bit of a bad boy craze, is that where this has gone? And if so, are author's making the choice between a strong protag and a strong love interest? Why can't they have both? Personally, I prefer books where the two MCs are at odds with each other. Both outspoken and bo...

Re: Gender roles: Emotionally weak heroines
Jkmcdonnell, I completely disagree with you about VA. Rose, in my opinion, is the perfect example of a strong (flawed) heroine. Sure, the first half of book one she is pretty full of herself but she learns and grows to become a better person. I barely recognized the character in the most recent book...

Re: Writer's conferences?
I'm back, fresh from WorldCon and I have to say it was amazing. The workshops really helped broaden my knowledge and everyone was so happy to be there and eager to share their experiences. Steve, I'm an unpublished writer but conferences aren't only for the published. They're useful no matter what l...

Re: What's your price?
The look any non-writer would give this thread O_o ("money vs. writing? seriously?") But I'm in the club who just couldn't stop writing. When I work so many days in a row and don't get any writing done I get really angry. I'm pretty sure my boy would choose the contract, too. Just to keep ...

Shopping, going out for coffee. More shopping.
Occasionally I'll clean my room to make it look pretty again but that's only if I'm really desperate.

Re: If you took a class on "New Adulthood"...
What about Feed by Mira Grant? My friend just finished reading it and she said she was up all night crying after it. She said it's very political, which is something she likes but doesn't really interest me. I read the first chapter of it while we weer waiting for our plane though and I'll say this ...

No Mira, thank you. And don't even get me started on Clary from the Mortal Instrument series... Sheesh.

Re: Genre: Steampunk
Clockwork Angel is most definitely Steampunk (and quite a lot better than the Mortal Instruments trilogy). Soulless (the first in the Parasol Protectorate) by Gail Carriger, His dark Materials by Philip Pullman are another two good ones. By the way, even though Soulless has a lady in a very Victori...

Re: MOCKINGJAY - spoiler edition
I know what everyone is saying about Collins bringing forth her opinions on war but as a novel, depressing endings aren't something that people expect (or want). I'm not saying that every ending has to be good but there at least has to be hope. There is hope for the districts and even a little for P...

Re: What are you reading now?
Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare - the prequel to the Mortal Instruments series. After that one (which I'm still not sure I like) I will be starting Quillblade by Ben Chandler. Met him at a convention I've been at for the last week and he's very intelligent; I'm looking forward to how that comes ...

Re: Dealing with Perfectionism
JadePhoenix, take heart. I've just come back from a convention and one of the writers on a panel I went to had writer's block for 25 years! He now has about 10 books published but from what he said, he was in the exact same position as you. The way he got through it was by writing something other th...

Re: Plot or Character - Which Comes First?
For me it's always character. They appear fully-formed in my head and generally from the type of character/paranormal creature they are, my story evolves.
