Re: How to find word count on your favorite novels
For some books, amazon.com have a section called "text stats" which sometimes have the word count in there....the text stats section is below the customer reviews bit....unfortunately they more often than not don't have the word counts Other than that you can do the LinexPagexwords per lin...

Re: HELP ME!!!
I definately watched the early series of lost, and I remember Mr Eko now, so it could well be that....I've not seen the Ringer, but I know the premise. I think it might have been the plot of a CSI episode at one point because I've got something lodged in my head about a man shacking up with his brot...

HELP ME!!!
GAHH!!! Readin a book at the moment where there's a twist in the plot where one brother steals the identity of another, but uses the confusion to lead a more altruistic life than either of them had before hand...... ....Thing is this feels like it's been done before. Like a criminal comes out of pri...

Re: Help with using the word "the"
If it's a quirk or affectation I say keep it - both versions of the sentance work fine for me, it just alters the stressing I 'hear' in the sentence when I read it. I think you can stick with either as long as your consistent.....Only other thing I can think of is to apostrophise (?) it...sooo... A ...

Re: Emotional Overload
As a man - I can't really help all that much actually. Effectively what you're after is a definition of an man, which I think is too broad to observe from inside the gender. Why? It's impersonal, and it's very difficult to be impersonal about yourself. And so, from a male point of view reading this ...

Re: Make Your Fight Scenes Believable
The way I see it - believability in the majority of fiction is basically a path that leads to self destruction for any novel. Take it to any extreme degree and you just won't have something anyone wants to read. (Disclaimer - all of this is generalisation to one degree or another) Romance/sex is lar...

Re: The Coffee Shop - AUGUST
but I always worry my friends are being too nice. Dude, you got it easy - hell I think I'm being too nice half the time and I'm the critical version of Simon Cowell with his pant rubbed liberally with DeepHeat. I think there's a real issue with conferring with the public (and by public I mean anyon...

Re: Where to Start with Sci-fi
I felt the same way about Dune - thoguht the first one was excellent....didn't like the 2nd and hated the first 90% of the last. I was like this with The Dark Knight.....once I get something in my head I don't accept, it taints everything. In The Dark Knight it was Batman refusing to kill the Joker,...

Re: Where to Start with Sci-fi
Just looking at me bookshelves now.....I guess it depends what you want in from a sci-fi book. If you can deal with the big doorstop fantasy's (and I mean BIIIIG - 400K worders) Then I highly recommend Peter F Hamilton's the Night's Dawn Trilogy. Starts with the reality disfunction. All 3 books are ...

Re: The Coffee Shop - AUGUST
This is why I hate writing (in a sense) I do the same thing spreadsheet wise, but I do it almost exclusively after the fact (which Is why I find I write in neat 5-7K chapters, without even realising I do it). I don't think about the turning point or the mis-section rise of action or the descent into...

Re: Breaking up Large Chunks of Monologue
This may sound like the most pithy sort of advice, but..... Treat it as a duologue. Play wise there's actually a second character - the audience. In novels you don't get this opportunity often. But you get a great opportunity to add the audience in as a second character. Basically it's having a Wats...

Re: Writing From Loneliness
Taking Introversion/extroversion as whether you take energy from social interactions or they tire you out, and shyness as the confidence in dealing with people when you meet them: I'm a shy extrovert. It's a bit like being hungry, living next to a plaza of reseraunts, but having a 10 pound limit on ...

Re: When do you seek outside opinion?
I actually fall a bit naturally into Brandon Sanderson's method, in as much that I do a first draft, then a heavy line edit, then it's ready to go out to the Alpha readers to pick apart.....though to be fair I've never had an alpha reader before creating the crit group with Dios4Vida a couple of mon...
