Re: The SQUEE GOOD NEWS Thread
Two and a half years ago I started coming to this forum because I'd written a book and I wanted to know everything there was to know about getting it published. Today it officially released from Turquoise Morning Press! For anyone who's curious, MEANT TO BE is now digitally available at Amazon, B&a...

Truly. Except for the 'writing a sonnet' part. Honestly, I may never recover from that.JonGibbs wrote:All in all, a grand day

Re: Where to Start with Sci-fi
McCaffrey's The Ship Who Sang (the first of the ship books that Mira couldn't recall) and her Powers That Be (Petabee) series. Both series start to degrade as they progress (just my opinion), but the first couple of books are longstanding faves for me. As someone mentioned, her books are soft soft ...

Re: Where to Start with Sci-fi
Hitchhikers Guide! The whole series. :) Otherwise, I tend toward the classics: The Foundation Trilogy by Asimov. It's alittle dated, but it still holds up, and it's pretty wonderful. Anything by Ursula LeGuin is brilliant. The Left Hand of Darkness, the Dispossessed. She's one of the greats. The Ill...

Sad to lose so many!
I'd like to add Nora Ephron. She was a screenwriter, a novelist and a journalist. Probably best known for directing Sleepless in Seattle and When Harry met Sally.

Ha! Fun concept.
I laughed, I cried, I wrote a sonnet. It was a good fight.

Re: Help with using the word "the"
I'd like to chime in and agree with not capitalizing it. It's somewhat distracting. The eye skips over the word 'the', but if you capitalize it, the eye stops and says "what is this capitalized 'the'? Better it not be capitalized and stay invisible, imho.
Interesting question!

Re: Help with genre
Hmmm. I wouldn't classify it as New Adult because you might miss out on readers. Even if the characters are in their 20s, older folk may still identify with them and enjoy the book. I think I'd classify it as adult fiction. Although, it's really hard to know without reading it. It could be a mystery...

Re: My new website is ready
Thanks, Mira. I didn't realize you were writing non-fiction. Yep. Memoir, essay, humor, and prescriptive non-fiction (pop psychology). Not nearly ready to publish, but working on stuff. I'm alittle envious of fiction writers. I can't do story. Just have no idea 'what happened next'. Wish I did! But...

Re: My new website is ready
Well, I think you accomplished that! And now you can be proud of both your books and your website. :D Btw, I love fantasy! Just added your book to my 'wish list'. I have to say, as a reader, going around to writer's forums really pays off in my TBR pile. Since I write non-fiction, I can just be a fa...

Re: When writing isn't your full-time job.
I'm sorry, Regan, it sounds exhausting. If it's a new job, just know that you'll probably adjust and stop being so tired after a couple of months. I also have a stressful job, and I'm tired in the evenings. I don't usually write during the week at all. I set aside time on the weekend, usually on Sun...

Re: J.K. Rowling's new book - The Casual Vacancy
If you're interested, here's an interesting article about recent book covers. They talk about why the choice was made for the Casual Vacancy, and seem to think it's a good thing: http://www.theatlantic.com/entertainment/archive/2012/07/book-cover-clones-why-do-so-many-recent-novels-look-alike/259884...
