Industry Blues Hit International Authors
I've had a gut feeling lately that publishers are holding off on publishing too much at all due to the current turmoil and uncertainty of e's, i's, pod's,twitters, kindles, and rainbows on roses. Most negatively affected seem to be international authors submitting to US.This uneasiness seems to be f...

Re: How do your reading habits influence your writing?
A post about kids and books got me thinking: I know there are all sorts of different tastes out there, and I am generally not one to judge based on what someone is reading. What works for me might not work for you, and vice versa, and that's okay. However, I do have my own tastes and preferences, a...

Re: What are your pet peeves about your own writing?
I've written my novel in the first person (past tense). So for me it seems that as I am editing, I am noticing way too may I's, my's and me's. It seems I must have noticed this somewhere along the writing process (this is my first attempt at writing - ever - so I know I have a lot to learn). In ord...
Re: YA Horror
I've started reading The Devouring and I think it is pretty excellent so far. Bad Girls Don't Die by Katie Alender is, so far, my favorite YA ghost story. It creeped me out a whole bunch. Project 17 by Laurie Faria Stolarz is definitely on my horror-to-read list. I can't tell you it is good though....
Re: YA Horror
I liked Lauren Myracle's BLISS, which came out last year. It takes place in a Southern boarding school in the 1960s. Very creepy and well-written. Myracle's more of a YA chick-lit author, but I wish she'd do more horror! I haven't read this one yet, but I heard that Simon Holt's THE DEVOURING is ve...
Re: YA Horror
Check out Pricker Boy by Scott Whinnem. It's more a ghost story, but perhaps it has some of the elements you're looking for. Christopher Pike used to write good horror novels when I was young. They were first more teen slasher type books but then he started to write some horror. Thanks, Beacon ; wi...

Re: Blog Series: "Interview with an Agent" - HOLLY ROOT
Kristi and eringayles, you're very welcome. Eringayles, not sure what you mean about it becoming permanent. And where is Nathan asking for topic suggestions? The request for topic suggestions is in 'All things procrastination', subject: 'Forum Suggestions', posted 9th Feb. It doesn't read as though...

Re: Blog Series: "Interview with an Agent" - HOLLY ROOT
Posted another interview today, this one with Holly Root of Waxman Literary Agency. Here's the link: http://motherwrite.blogspot.com/2010/03/interview-with-agent-holly-root.html This is a very valuable site, Krista. I'd like to see it become permanent. Nathan is asking for topic suggestions, what b...

Re: What are you reading now?
Just finished a YA - ANGEL BLOOD. About a group of kids in a hospice for children born grotesquely deformed - no eyes / tissue skin/ fingers on spine. (Sounds horrid, but it's not gratuitous horror). Instead of providing a hospice, the authorities are conducting experiments. This book is unique. I's...

Re: Query Critique - The Potter's Daughter - Revision 5
*Please go to the end of the thread to see Revision 5* I have withheld comment from the other critiques because I have yet to get a request for even a partial. Out of 25 queries I have received 12 rejections. I have been following the Blog and comments for almost a year and think it is time I look ...

Re: Query : GEMINI CURSED - paranormal romance
Thanks, Wallflower. I knew I was off...didn't realize I was that off, but you've definitely given me a lot to think about and attack in the next revision. Obviously, I'm still having a difficult time figuring out how much information is enough to get the general gist of what is involved across, wit...

Re: What Brings You to the Keyboard?
Is your writing mostly for external or internal affirmation? If you are reading (or writing) this, you have the audacity and possibly the arrogance to believe that someone wants to hear what you have to say. In fact, we writers go beyond the boldness of the message and believe that others may find ...

Re: Chasing the Market...
I have fun resurrecting my old rejections. One, a contemporary romance has just finished its morphing into a paranormal. 15 yrs ago it was a so-so, now my agent is really enthusiastic. I've had a face lift, and I know what it can do for you. Does the same for a book, I suppose . . . When I read your...
