Re: Thoughts on "The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher"
I read that one last summer when I was on vacation, and I have to say that it was very well done. The author really made the story come alive in a way that had me wondering at times if I was reading fact or fiction. The details were remarkably well done, and the follow up she gave of the characters ...

Re: TWILIGHT - thoughts?
As a guy, I'm not the target audience for this book, which probably shows, b/c I tried to read the first one and I didn't even make it all the way through I disliked it so much. But, it is easy to see why it was successful - it came out at a time when Vampire novels were re-emerging, it was innocent...

Re: A new revenue model for E-books?
Simpatico - you are probably right that people would gloss over it (or block it) unless it was an actual static part of the file that couldn't be effectively blocked like internet ads. However, you do raise another good point, which is a subscription model. I remember that Yahoo had a music service ...

You are evil! :)rose wrote:I represent the Tragedy of the Commons answer. I would like the free with ads ebook, please. And then I would also like the work-around hack that suppresses the ads, like the Firefox Adblock add-on does.

Re: POV question
as I recently learned, "head hopping" is just a POV violation. I.e., you are writing a chapter from Bob's POV, but you put in something that Fred knows - something that Fred would had to have told Bob.

Re: Ask Nathan
Nathan, I've got an idea for a project that is 1/2 fiction and 1/2 non-fiction, about the energy crisis and peak oil (i.e., one chapter non-fiction, one non-fiction, alternating). Would it be better to pitch this as fiction or non-fiction (I know there are substantial query differences). Thanks! Th...

Re: Can you read while you write?
Right now all of my works in progress are very different from what I normally read, so I feel pretty safe. However, I can tell you that if I ever try to write a comedy I'm definitely going to stay away from reading any Christopher Moore, and if I try to right a vampire novel I'm going to stay away f...

Unreasonable Expectations
I'm an impatient guy... I expect things to get done hasta pronto, and I'm always looking to start the next project (very good with respect to my deadline driven job) - unfortunately, I've been projecting that on my writing as well. Which is making me crazy! At the moment I'm working on two novels, a...

Re: Amazon buys touch screen company
One thing is for sure, which is that they are going to make a lot more money on eBooks now that they are taking a 30% of fixed sale price on most eBooks instead of trying to sell it for $9.99 and taking a loss... However, I still believe that eBook readers will diverge - you'll have very top end one...

Re: Looking for a little help on getting started
I would just start reading through agent blogs... look at the links on those blogs to other agents and chose the 1/2 dozen you like the most, then DON'T query them. Why? Your first round query should be like a test - see if there is any interest at all. Then after you get 20-30 rejections racked up,...

McMillan pulled from Amazon
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/30/technology/30amazon.html?ref=bookse A recent article on NY times said that Amazon had pulled all books from McMillan, except that those offered from 3rd party vendors. This is apparently in response to a debate over eBook prices. I don't know how this will affect A...

Re: Attachment to your first draft?
I have that problem as well... you blaze through a draft, and then you go through and read it, you fix all the typos, change he awkward wording, etc., and you have a perfectly grammatically correct manuscript - however, you're missing something to make it pop and you have scenes that don't really co...

Re: Good article on how print will not die
I don't think anyone will (reasonably and honestly) argue that print books are going to disappear - I think what people will argue though is the percentage of books bought in print vs. digital, and who's going to get the money from that.
