From "I love you, but I'm leaving you anyway" by Tracy McMillan.
She's gotten physical with me before - a wooden spoon once, a slapped face here and there, some hair pulling, and once, a bar of Tone soap in my mouth - but never like this.

Re: Writer Conferences
I'm planning on attending the Pacific Northwest Writers Association Writers Conference in Bellevue, Washington in August 2011. Hi BTW, I'm planning on attending, too! Hope to meet you. Is anyone else from here going? I'm also entering their writing contest. Right now, I'm in the middle of preparing...

Re: Query for THE LAST SYMPHONY OF JUAN GARCIA
Hi Kevin,
I want to read your book.
I think you have a stellar query, it drew me right in and made me want more. What more can you want from a query? I wish you the best of luck and I am sure that it will get attention.

The "Random Quote" game
Here's how it works: 1. Grab the nearest book to you. (If it's in arm's reach, you get extra credit.) 2. Turn to page 105. 3. Go to the second full paragraph on the page. (If it's dialogue, that's okay.) 4. Go to the third sentence in the paragraph. (If it's fewer than three sentences, write the las...

Re: Computer/Word/Keyboard Tricks I wish someone told me about
Here's one I learned only about a month ago: Hold down the "control" key (ctrl) and hit "enter" and you'll get a page break. Use page breaks for new chapters to format your manuscript. I put in page breaks at new chapters right from the beginning. It makes it much easier to find ...

"Six Months in Sudan: A Young Doctor in a War-Torn Village" by James Maskalyk
It's good. I like the way he writes. He's with the humanitarian group "Doctors Without Borders." It's ... hard to read about some of the stuff that he deals with.

Re: Favourite characters' names?
Ha! This one brings a smile to my face... I just remembered a favorite character name from from a MA book when I was a kid: Abner Abner George. I LOVED that name, and I would go around chanting it. The character was actually called the entire thing, every time. The name was explained in some fashion...

Re: Gmail queries and italics
Hi Holly, Congratulations on your big step forward! I also am using Gmail to send my queries; I read somewhere that it is permissable to use all caps for a book title, and this is what I am doing. I was at a workshop a few months ago where the teacher (an agent) said that you can use a smaller font,...

Re: Favourite characters' names?
Lol. I mumble the names. Hee hee hee. How about Hermione in Harry Potter? I found out that I'd been reading it (and mentally pronouncing) it wrong for years. Or maybe those other people are wrong? I believe I've heard it pronounced several different ways! ...I wonder if JK got any grief from her be...

Look me up when you move to Seattle! I'll take you out to dinner, and then we'll all stand around afterwards talking! Or maybe you'd prefer Starbucks? Looking forward to it!Sommer Leigh wrote:Have I mentioned yet how I plan to move to the Northwest in the next five years to get away from this weather?

Re: So I want to self publish...and I did!
Congratulations! Thank you for sharing your self-publishing story; I think it is wonderful to hear from someone who has had such a great experience. I was at a writer's conference last Spring, and one of the atendees told me that she'd spoken with several agents and editors. All of them supported an...

Re: Query: COZY'S CURSE (mystery)
Hi AJ I like it too. I think you've captured a great voice, and I can easily imagine it carrying over to your book. The police are called, and Cozy looks awfully guilty with a swollen lip and the murder weapon in her possession. If she doesn’t use her gut instincts and her audiographic memory to fin...

Re: "Meet my wife. She's an Agent."
Now it's time to cross my fingers and hold my breath!!!!! (Imagine me doing a happy dance.) The agent (who I am pretty sure is actually a literary publicity agent) that I met last Sunday liked my query, and sent it on to the editor of a small publisher. She (the acquisition editor) liked the query a...
