Re: Rookie Mistakes?
I was actually thinking of mistakes of craft, but it's good to highlight these mistakes of practice, too. I can never get over the ones where people show up on the doorstep of an agency or publishing house, or mail personal things like lockets or teeth with their queries. What are these people think...

Re: The Novella and Stephanie Meyer
I read the entire Twilight series. I knew what I was getting into story-wise. ;-) Although the thing about "dark-red hair" threw me, and I'm still not over it. I HATE inconsistencies like that. And yes, I used all-caps. Yes I did. But, the quality of the physical book - the paper, the desi...

Re: So who's entering Nathan's first page contest?
I'm planning to enter, but only once I've written the first page of my YA manuscript. I started writing it from the middle, and I need to go back (now that I've established a tone) and write the beginning.

Re: World Cup!!!
Two words: instant replays. The cameras are already rolling, and there are multiple cameras to show the play from multiple angles. If the ref had a good view or if the foul has a fairly minor consequence (like losing possession or a free kick for the other team) the instant replay can be foregone, b...

Re: The Novella and Stephanie Meyer
I actually recently read this novella, and aside from your points, (which I mostly agree with), I hated that there were no chapter breaks. Is this normal for novellas? I haven't read many, so I wondered if this was typical or just a quirk unique to this particular book.

Re: Referring to Mom and Dad in third person?
I think it can be done, as in your example, but it depends on the context and how it reads on the page. In instances like your example, though, isn't "Paw" (or whomever) what that character is always called, unless one of the characters is speaking to them? For example, "The stranger ...

Rookie Mistakes?
I've noticed a few posts here and there about people noticing "rookie mistakes", and Nathan mentioned them in his blog, so I'm wondering: what are the big ones? I'm a rookie, and I'd love to know what the usual rookie mistakes are so I can avoid them!

1. Amy & Roger’s Epic Detour by Morgan Matson (added by Sommer Leigh) 2. Outlander by Diana Gabaldon (added by Robin---- this book is awesome to read while sitting next to the pool) 3. The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants by Ann Brashares (added by Ishta Mercurio, who just noticed that "b...

Re: PREDICT THE NEXT BIG YA GENRE
Hmm... I don't know about that. Did Harry Potter spur a glut of Magician books? (I'm actually ignorant on this topic, since I was busy working with autistic kids and starting a charity and then moving from the UK to Canada and then being a new mom when the HP books were being written and I wasn't re...

Re: World Cup!!!
I hear you saying that the USA was pretty solid, but I disagree. They finished the first half well, and they were definitely fairly solid in the second half, but for at least the first thirty minutes they seemed just a shade behind. Their marksmen were always behind England's players, and they could...

Re: A forum game: three word story
Once upon a horse Sonja feared the darkness across the river might be too deep. Sighing, she turned and found a block of cheese made of Venusian so she picked up a sword to pierce into the looming thicket. "No!" said the block of cheese! "Don't go there!" But the cheese did not k...

Re: World Cup!!!
I think you mean to say that it's lucky that Tim Howard was born in the USA. Too right! His being named MVP for the match was well deserved. Over 23 shots on goal, and most of them were by England. He earned his money today. Ending on a tie was a great result - although it looked for a few minutes ...

Re: Why do you reread books?
I've found myself rereading a few books lately to scope them out for appropriateness for my 6-yr-old, who loves books and is pretty advanced in terms of ability, but is fairly naive in terms of life experience. (He finds the Wicked Witch of the West to be almost too scary in "The Wizard of OZ&q...
