Re: Do you have a new blog post?

Well, I finally went full circle. Now it's back to stories! What I'm tentatively dubbing the Arethus Account takes place about 3500 years before the events of my WIP Harbinger (note: in the *current* Harbinger universe, not the one I'm toying with), and today's the first bit! You should totally chec...

Re: Idealism vs. Conspiracy

Will changing things make your book change from a [sigh] to a OMG? Hopefully, yes. A lot of my beta readers (from my target audience, no less) reacted with more or less OMG, but if I can't work out the kinks in the sequel they'll never get to move on. So...I suppose I'll give it a shot and see wher...

Re: Chapter Accordian

Oh. Sorry for misunderstanding. Hmm... Actually, I still think the "whatever works, works" mantra still applies here, and I don't think you should rely on chapter boundaries to control pacing. Think about it this way: if each chapter is a box, and each box has something inside it, are you ...

Re: Idealism vs. Conspiracy

Of course, I'm also so burned out of this story right now (the first draft of this WIP was the hardest year of writing I've ever done) that I hardly want to look at it anymore. Hopefully you aren't in the same boat there. I'm beginning to reach that point with the sequel--no matter what I do, it al...

Idealism vs. Conspiracy

Hello everyone, sorry I've been away again. Lately I've been struggling with an issue about my MS, and I'm still on the fence about it. I figured you all could help, being wiser and more experienced than I am. My MS, Harbinger, is one old hands here have probably heard me mention a few times. Though...

Re: I really need some encouragement right Now!

Congrats, washingtonwriter, and bravo. I have the same problems quite often (and am trying to work through a couple right now). I guess if you had the courage and ability to overcome the obstacles, I might stand a chance too.

Re: Chapter Accordian

I have to agree with Sierra and Phil: it really comes down to what works and what doesn't. Battle scenes shouldn't be split up by chapters, so if you have a long or climactic battle, it'll probably end up being a long chapter. Likewise, peaceful scenes that provide the characters some respite might ...

Re: The Bransforumsfest Writing Workshop Brainstorm

Hup! Just in time, it seems. Sorry I'm late. I can agree with five of the six top choices, but can't meet n' greet be done in its own time, like before we even begin the workshops? I agree with Trixie here--why establish an entire workshop slot for it if we can do it another time? It's fine either w...

Re: The Bransforumsfest Writing Workshop Brainstorm

I got some people I'm working on. That would be me. Sorry for being so late to this party, everyone, but I've been crazy busy these past few weeks. After taking a year off of school, adjusting back is proving to be a bit harder than expected... Norse mythos absolutely fascinates me. I'll do my best...

Re: Writing a Trilogy

Are you a pantser? If so, this is a bit harder, because you'll end up juggling four plots in your head at once: the overarching plot of the trilogy, and the individual plots of each book. It's probably a good idea, pantsing nature be damned, to scribble down at least the basic idea or even simple qu...

Re: Here we go again--planners plus pantsers=?

She said that the routine and relaxation of the shower (and the...umm...satisfaction of using the toilet) actually releases a chemical in your brain that makes it super-relaxed for a few minutes, thereby allowing the subconscious mind to work better and idea come to the surface. THIS EXPLAINS EVERY...

Re: Here we go again--planners plus pantsers=?

The funny thing is, that usually even if something in that later scene seems totally random, I usually find that the mechanisms to make that scene work are already there, like it was in my subconscious all along! This is so true!! I can't tell you how many times I go back and find that some tiny, i...

Here we go again--planners plus pantsers=?

Hello forumgoers, long time no see. I've been meaning to get on more, but life keeps getting in the way. Anyway, I had a question I'd like your opinions on. We hear a lot about two of the big camps in the writer's world: planners and pantsers. Planners plan. Pantsers go by the seats of their trouser...

Re: Genre confusion

I have to agree with dios4vida in that having minor elements of a genre doesn't necessarily make the work into that genre. For example, my WIP is fantasy but incorporates many elements of science into it (particularly quantum mechanics and theoretical physics). But since this is overshadowed by the ...

Re: Am I the only one whos Characters have music themes

I don't have a concrete playlist, but I do file through iTunes to pick out songs to fit certain characters, scenes, etc. Sometimes I need silence, but music works well when I first sit down--it helps me get in the right mood, I guess. Though I think what really makes me a nerd (in this case--there's...
