Re: Publishing Without Amazon
Maybe I scanned it too fast.
You only do hard copy publishing with direct distribution to book stores? Where and how many?
No e-books?
Are authors expected to pay up-front money in order to get published?

The Top 10 Things All Authors Should Know About Amazon
The first one caught me by surprise – Your Amazon rating has nothing to do with sales. Really? Reading it was an inspiration. Amazon reviews carry weight. CreateSpace uses Ingram's services – I didn't even know anything about Ingram. And it IS a service you have to pay for! Claim your book via Autho...

Re: Transitional Words and Phrases
Sigh. I don't know - maybe it's just me. I get an idea, it germinates, and I sit down to write. Usually after a good start, I set about establishing my characters so they tend to draw the narrative forward. I have one WIP that is really getting to me. As it's historical fiction, I'm constrained in c...

Re: Transitional Words and Phrases
Thanks for an informative post - as usual. I think the key word is "formal" which may not always relate to prose. I realize a lot of words tends to be over used and I also noted comments about what words tend to start sentences. It's interesting what all the little tricks are that turn a d...

Transitional Words and Phrases
I need some help. In reviewing/revising/editing a novel, I am using a grammar analytical program which consistently tells me I am not using enough transitional words and phrases. I understand what they are but wonder why they are considered so important. I like to keep my sentences short and simple,...

Word Frequency Count Software
I don't remember what it was or where I found it but in my old PC I had a free program that counted the frequency of words in a document.
My LibreOffice comes with a character and word count but not the frequency feature.
Any suggestions?

Re: seeking advice
The problem with Lulu for self-publishing is the lack of a wide base for sale.
CreateSpace is actually part of Amazon.com so when you publish your work there, it appears on the Amazon.com site. Be aware that before your work can be put up for sale, you have to buy the proof copy.

Re: What're the challenges facing in the Self-Publisher's world?
Marketing your works!!!! Established publishers pay smaller royalties because the put a lot of $$$$ in publicizing/marketing their products. They also have established distribution points. Let's say you self-publish on Kindle or CreateSpace paperback for Amazon.com. Where are you going to get the mo...

I had an epiphany! Someone read my latest short story and told me it was passive, dull, and boring!
Ouch.

First few paragraphs of short story. Got a lot of work to do - it's 28,500 words A faint mist blurred an expanse of water stretching from north to south. Gabriel Fletcher had never seen the like. Since leaving the craggy, green hills of eastern Tennessee, he'd encountered swamps, huge rivers, endles...
