Re: Novellas

I know people say the Big Houses don't like literary or novellas, but #2 treated me quite well. And that is pretty encouraging! A writer can submit an unsolicited manuscript for consideration directly to the publisher at many smaller presses who nonetheless have distribution channels comparable to ...

Just send it in.

Paul Harding won the Pulitzer Prize in fiction last year for his novella TINKERS.

Yes you do need to pay. I am sure it is worth it though.

Re: Novellas

Some of the literary journals and anthologies take them, and many e-publishers don't seem opposed. We're talking 15K-45K words or thereabouts? Yeah I've been checking out e-publishers and I noticed they are much more open minded with shorter books. I will definitely query them when the time is right.

Re: Novellas

I have no experience in this, but it may be best to go ahead and pitch it anyway. If you're really not sure keep it as is, but also right it as a novel and see how that goes. Anyways, some of the best works in Literature are novellas. Thanks Moni. It might be worth a try to expand the story while k...

Re: Novellas

For what it's worth, because this was years ago, I had an agent (now retired, sorry) who took me on as a client based on a novella. One of the big houses asked for an exclusive on it, then requested to see the next one I wrote, intending to publish them together. Of course, it never materialized, b...

Novellas

Does anyone know of agencies or publishers that represent novellas? I know that they are a hard sell. Is it something that a writer should try and expand to full book length? I have considered adding more to the story, but it seems just right the way it is. I think it's worth a try to see if someone...

Yeah it should be interesting to see how popular it gets - if it does.

Re: Early Adult - New Genre?

I hope that new adult does become a full fledged genre. But I think the age group should go up to 29 or 30. People in their late 20's are definitely still in that youthful indiscretion, self-identity struggle phase.

Indenting paragraphs

So what is the exact number of spaces you need to indent a new paragraph in a manuscript? Dumb question, I know.

Re: Query - Possessed

Thanks for your help. I guess that I will have incorporate some back story into the query and fix more weak spots.

This is much harder than I thought!

Re: Query - Possessed

I was playing around with the opening sentences in comparison to my last revision. I am trying to decide which version sounds more gripping. Dear Agent, Gabriel is a murderer. The experiment he volunteered for was supposed to erase the memories. Now all he knows is one thing: If he does not get out ...

Re: Do any of you other unpublished authors have websites?

Sara, I think the blog is enough. I actually think it's unprofessional to have a website all about your unpublished works in progress, acting as if they're already published books or heavily trying to market them, etc. Yes, you can certainly include project descriptions and info about what you're w...

Re: Query - Possessed

I see your point about that line "He wishes he could erase what he did to them". I can simply show that in the story, but it doesn't really need to be mentioned in the query. You're right though - he "shouldn't" feel bad for what he did, but he does. Yeah I get what you're saying...
