Re: What pays your rent?
My parents. Hey, I'm in high school. But I do have a job. I work at my town's library, shelving, sorting, tidying, etc. I don't earn much from it, but I like it. I also plan to get an additional job this summer with more hours, not because I want to, but because... college... tuition... expensive.....

Re: Do love interest characters need to be sexy?
Essentially, in order to answer this question, you need to realize what, exactly, your goals are. For instance, if your audience will be inserting themselves into the main character's shoes, and this is the main purpose of the book, then, yes, the love interest character does need to be sexy. If you...

Re: When someone inspires a character
I never tell. My characters all either (a) are horrible people, (b) go through hell, or, usually, (c) both. In fact, this is why I rarely do base characters off of people, but when I do, I'd never say anything. Because it'd be an insult.

Re: Protagonist/Hero is also the bad guy??
Personally, this is... about 90% of the protagonists I write. A protagonist is simply the character the story focuses on, and the antagonist is the character who stands in opposition to his/her goals. For a classic example of the protagonist-as-bad-guy, antagonist-as-good-guy, check out the manga De...

Fade to Black?
Okay, sorry if there's already a topic on this, but - what are your opinions on fade to black sex scenes? I've heard people say that they're always bad, that it's the only way to do things, that it's good or bad in certain contexts... If the author doesn't feel a sex scene would advance the plot at ...

Re: Character Creation Process
Generally, I find a photograph online of a person who looks roughly how I pictured the character and shape my idea around that picture. I get really detailed, try to figure out everything I can about the person. I always try to know more about my story and the people in it than I'd ever need to writ...

Re: What is your writing weakness? (Let's call this therapy)
The reason I think perfectionism is a flaw, for me, is that I can't seem to get the whole "don't get it right, get it written" thing through my head. It wouldn't be so bad if I just made a copy and edited it a lot. Instead, what I always seem to do is write 30k words, then decide that's al...

Re: The Use of Specific Terms in Fantasy
It depends. There's a reason a gladius was called a gladius. If that reason doesn't exist in your world, it would be very disorienting to hear about it. For example, my WIP is set in a society with limited technology and no knowledge of how it works, and very little medical/biological knowledge. One...

^^And since that's probably one of her more emphasized traits (she's kind of a hyper-intelligent assassin with the personality of a frat boy who likes nothing more than a challenging assignment) I think I'm good *is relieved*

Re: Stereotypical Characters
Thanks for all the advice! :) What would you guys think about a character who's intelligent, analytic, well-read, sarcastic, cynical, blunt, fond of machine guns, and also happens to be a promiscuous bisexual? I know that it's something of a stereotype for a bi character to sleep around, but it's re...

Stereotypical Characters
I try really hard to avoid characters that are stereotypical to their race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, etc. But if you have a character that really seems to be a certain way that is somewhat stereotypical, but is developed beyond that, is it better to change things that are stereotypical,...
